This hits the nail on the head. Why agree to a funding bill the WH will change the deal on through impoundment and rescission of funds to legally roll it back through a simple majority?

Republicans made their bed.

One recent wrinkle is Vought cutting stuff that some R senators want funded and they are pissed but won't say anything. Result is that Thune has less support in his caucus than in previous budget fights since some are free riding on the D refusal now. Obvious consequences are obvious lol.

Those cowardly Republicans can take their concerns and stuff them. They're US Senators, not little smol beans with no power.

Related note, not a lot of soybeans being grown in Portland/Chicago/LA/SF either ...

Remind me again what Dems should be doing differently?
I was referring to people talking about Shumer caving all the time, not so much the power to stop the shit down. I wasn’t very clear on that. But Dems are really bad about letting the public know who to blame for this would be. They just aren’t loud enough.

Swimming upstream against the natural pro-R media bias that represents Democrats as the only people with agency and avoids talking about there being an R trifecta that fully controls the government. Unfortunately our legislative leaders can mostly only dog paddle which is a problem.

Though on the plus side Trump is undoubtedly going to crow about how great a shutdown is because they think they can fire way more people more easily and, I assume, just decide to not pay stuff like SSI if they want. He's gonna shoot his own dick off with a bazooka.

I have to wonder if a shutdown is actually the best case scenario for the country.

Also, doesn't this kinda prove that a shutdown isn't the end of the world, and that using the threat of shutdown as a hostage negotiating tactic is no longer a valid option?

A media ecosystem that includes social media where both left and right can complain only about Democrats.

As long as the Democrats stick to their guns this time, maybe there will be some slightly better outcome. With 6 months to further tank Trump's polling numbers on everything, it becoming abundantly clear that Vought intends to illegally not spend legally appropriated funds, and congressional Republicans having no interest in forcing the impoundment issue (and even agreeing to rescissions to alter deals after the fact), Democrats should have more wind in their sails at this point in time vs March.

Democrats also have a simple public ask: fund healthcare to keep costs from exploding. There is obviously more to the fight, but the public message for the masses that are not so tuned in as literally anyone on this forum save a few that seem to perpetually live under rocks is that Republicans are shutting down the government because they want to make your life more expensive.

Under Trump, things are going to cost more and life is going to be worse.

This is why and how Dems lose voters. We don’t want republicans, but we don’t want no weak ass bitches

What should democratic leadership be doing right now in your opinion.

Show me an example of strength and courage on the republican side of the house and senate

From what I can see, the republican side is filled with cowards who are too scared to do their job out of fear of Trump sabotaging their career.

Shutdowns while unpopular are mostly forgotten about by the time the next election rolls around. Illegally firing half the government like Trump and Co want to do is going to have a far bigger blast radius.

And Republicans are screaming it from the hills about wanting to illegally fire people because of the shutdown (Also, shutdowns don't give magical powers to fire government employees, and they are were already illegally firing them before the shutdown). The threats truly ring hollow and Republicans are going to face all the blow back because they can't hide their glee over a shutdown.

Forgot with senator was speaking, but as she said, a senior couple in her state making around $80,000, they can expect their healthcare costs to go up $11,000 from the cuts of the big beautiful bill starting today

Their need for pointless cruelty overrides all political calculation.

You are right about messaging.
Another major failure is in the news media.
American outlets have been sued into submission and/or purchased and dominated by regime leaning assholes.
