How do you purchase a knife and bring it home without breaking the law?

Maybe the receipt for said knife qualifies as a "hazardous/dangerous materials transfer permit"?

Show me your papers for that knife granny!!

Probably the same as buying a second hand gun in the US - just hide it in the trunk and hope nobody finds it

or you can do it the legal way and transport your steak knives in one of these:

Go to shop.
Pick knife.
Pay for knife.
Leave shop.
Use favoured mode of transport home.
*note do not wave knife about in air while screaming*

How do you guys do it?

It's not illegal to carry a knife in public here. Does the law specify it's only illegal to have a knife in public if you wave it in the air while screaming? I thought the only exemption was if the knife was under a certain size?

It's not illegal to carry a knife in public here either.

The law makes a distinction between carrying home your kitchen knife from the shop and, say, hiding it in your jacket and taking it to a football match.

My understanding of UK law is that you have to have an ambiguously defined "valid reason" for carrying anything over a 3" folding slip-joint knife. So basically if a random police officer decides your reason is invalid, you're screwed.

I could definitely see that happening.

EDIT: What allowances does the law have for postal workers who carry knives in their packages? Say one of the packages is heavily damaged and the knife is showing?

Aren't you the one who said people in UK aren't allowed to say things like "get out of my country ya poof, country's full"

No, I'm not.

Would calling someone a retard in England under your current hate speech laws be illegal? According to a recent PSA here in the states, it is no different than calling someone a **gger, *pic, etc. If not, why?

If they are mentally handicapped then it may well be.

If you can't have a knife in public, how does one acquire a kitchen knife in the UK? Smugglers?

Buy it, keep it in the box with the receipt and carry it home, it's fine as long as you have just bought it, you can carry a knife with good reason.

And you have no problem with the fact that you have no real say in what that reason is?

What do you mean? Do you think it's a problem that I can't make up a valid reason? Or that I can't choose what is deemed valid or not? No, I have no problem with either of those, if everyone could go around making up what reasons are valid reasons to carry a knife then everyone would have one.

There are valid reasons to carry a knife and any sensible jury will agree with a valid reason.

Naive faith at its finest.

I carry a locking 3" knife for utility purposes. I have never been accused (let alone convicted) of anything beyond a speeding ticket. Yet in the UK "miscellaneous utility" is not a "valid reason" because the government would be of the opinion that I'm more likely to use that evil locking knife to stab a person than a box.

So I'd be arrested for carrying a concealed "deadly weapon" because the blade happens to lock. And that makes sense to you? Oh wait... (remembers quote in sig)

It makes perfect sense to me. You shouldnt carry a deadly weapon if you have no valid reason for doing so. For shits a giggles isnt a valid reason.

In the UK you would and should be arrested if a police officer found a knife on you.

An object is only as deadly as one chooses it to be. First guns, now knives, what is next? Seriously, what is next on the list?

What about carrying a knife for emergency preparedness? I am sure this will seem funny, or even paranoid to you, but simply having a small knife can save your or others lives. What I was taught as a kid anyway.

A locking blade is not a deadly weapon because it locks. That's my point.

Locking blades are stronger and more resilient. There are also a greater variety produced leading to a better bang for your buck. Those are my "valid reasons".

But I forget how cluelessly naive you are. Suppose it's not a coincidence that the vast majority of knife and gun control advocates are woefully uneducated about knives or guns beyond statistics that suit their agendas.

I'm for people not being able to carry any kind of knives without a valid reason.

Yes, those are the reasons I choose to carry a locking knife. I choose to carry a more resilient knife that will hold up to abuse longer and save me money. Apparently that's a felony in the UK.

In any case, not trusting your neighbor with a knife because you're afraid he'll use it as a weapon, or because you're out to get the criminals and are willing to screw over your own neighbor to do so, are funny and paranoid to me. You have to have all of these laws to feel safe, I feel plenty safe without them and without any extra effort on my part.

Bottom line: You're a child. When you grow up and learn to trust people and not let your opinions be based on the actions of an extreme minority of criminals, let me know.

There's no such thing as a felony over here AFAIK it's just a crime. There are no valid reasons for you to carry a knife.

I want criminals on a leash, fuck everyone else if thats the only way to do that.

Sure you do. You have no problems saying guns should be banned or take issue with the original subject of this thread. Are you really saying your imagination does not allow you to come up with the next "deadly and dangerous" item that will be made illegal? Because as soon as it does, I am sure you will be saying "good" and "they should be arrested". Do you put no thought whatsoever into your countries laws and regulations?

That seems funny and paranoid to me.

Of course it does, that is why I said it would seem funny and paranoid to you. However, to the thousands that have been saved by an emergency tracheotomy, or cut their jammed seatbelt in a crash, or any of the other hundreds of examples, I am quite sure this IS NOT funny, nor paranoid, to them.

I have to assume you have never used a bladed object other than a table knife to cut your bangers with. Based on your comments, you can't even imagine a valid reason for carrying a knife period.

Do you feel safer knowing law abiding citizens can't carry a knife, given the knife related crime statistics in London and elsewhere?

Has it ever occurred to you that criminals don't follow laws? Carrying weapons is illegal yet every chav has a weapon. Guns are illegal in new york city but every cirminal in the city somehow has a gun.

I suppose I don't know enough about what other deadly / dangerous weapons are out there or being used to kill people. I put a huge amount of thought into my countries laws, as this thread shows.

I have an emergency seat belt cutting device in my car. I couldn't perform a tracheotomy

I do eat with a knife actually! There are valid reasons for carrying a knife.

Absolutely I do. because if law abiding citizens start carrying knives to defend themselves against knives, then the criminals get pistols, then we get pistols, then the criminals get SMG's.... and so on, and so on and so on.

True enough, but at the moment chavs don't need guns, which is a very good thing. Getting a gun in the UK is (so I'm told) a lot more difficult than in America.
