And what do you think the referendum in 2020 will be?

Against Trump. He’ll be a one term president. Although we all thought he’d be a zero term president but here we are. I highly doubt he creates the excitement hat he did the first go around.

After watching a Christmas Carol tonight I’m hoping three ghosts visit Trump tonight.

And his most powerful symbol. UC is too busy acting as apologist to notice that, apparently.

Agreed. The reason the Dems dug in isn’t because it’s a waste of money. This would be a symbol of a Trump victory, that’s it. I mean pretty much that’s frickin it.

The xenophobes, the racists, the haters & the proto-fascists have wanted the Wall for 100 years. Trump is just their current champion & cult leader.

Bullshit. It's a waste of money and they have said as much.
They have said they will give money for border security.

The wall is nothing but a boondoggle. Has been, it is now, and it always will be.

I agree it’s a boondoggle waste of money but that’s not why the government is shut down. It’s the most potent symbol of the rise of Trump. Like one of his towers everlasting along the border saying frick you I won. A reminder to the country that the right exists and is still a force to be reckoned with.

The right doesn’t see it that way, they think this will work in stopping illegal immigration, and it’s permanence can’t be undone by funding cuts of future administrations. They don’t see it as symbolism of any sort, they see it as functional (rightly or wrongly). The left sure does though.

Thus here we are. Nancy doesn’t care about $5 billion. The budget is $3.8 trillion, the government isn’t shut down becauce of 0.001% of the budget. The government is shut down because the Dems dug in and said no to the construction of such symbol. They say it’s a symbol of "hate". Whatever. It’s a symbol of victory of Trump which cannot stand. Defeat his campaign promise and you defeat (this part at least) of the election and administration.

Just because spending has exploded since Trump took office doesn't mean we should throw good money after bad. $5 BILLION dollars is still too much money for a boondoggle. For that matter, even $1 is. No matter how bloated the budget has gotten. Party of fiscal responsibility indeed.

"The government is shut down because the Dems dug in and said no to the construction of such symbol. "

No, no and no. Repeating that lie over and over does not make it true.
There was a clean CR for thge budget to last until Feb, that cheeto was going to sign. Then he listened to the right-wing talking heads (coulter and limbaugh)
that told him don't sign it.
https://forums.anandtech.com/thread...trump-will-have.2558863/page-17#post-39685446

cheeto then, on national TV from the oval office said HE would (proudly) shut down the gov't and he wouldn't blame Schumer.
He owns this. He admitted this on TV.
Now trying to blame it on the Dems just makes him more of a verified liar, for all the world to see.

And as Sonikku said, 5B is a lot of money. A shit-ton of money, as a matter-of-fact.
5B could probably fix most or all of most of California's homeless problem.
134,000 homeless with 5B? That's just under 40K per person.

The government is shutdown because Americans elected someone unfit to lead.

How many times has a compromise been on the table to have two-scoops-man-baby Twitter and fox news his way to fail.

Obstructing for 8 years was easy. Given the chance to lead, conservatives have shown exactly how sincere they we're the whole time.

UC buys that blame the Democrats nonsense hook, line, and sinker.

It seems Trump just told the press he wants "the wall" completed by Election Day.

The right, absolutely, 100% sees it as a symbol above and beyond anything else. They have elevated ‘the wall’ into almost a religious totem. That’s why Trump is digging in on this, he can’t be seen to lose his magic totem.

I don't think this is a situation of "almost" but "identical to". Politics becomes faith based on many things and Trump has taken over the role of Political Christ.

LOL the wall is a physical structure which needs to be maintained, which takes a lot of money. From what I recall maintaining the wall over 10 years will take more money than it would take to build it initially. Without that maintenance the wall will fall into disrepair and eventually into dust. It truly is pointless, doesn't stop anyone, and will take way more than 5B to maintain. It is literally pissing money into the wind.

In pure dollars yes, as a percent of gdp no. What has changed is more is being put on the credit card. You’re statement spending has exploded isn’t really accurate.

Shutting down the government because you think something that is 0.001% of the budget is too much to swallow seems....questionable.

I don’t blame just the democrats, that’s a lie. Certainly falls on the shoulders of Trump and the GOP, he’s the one who wants it and that shut down the government until he gets it. To pretend the Dems haven’t dug in and said nope not going along with it, shut down the gov if you must I’m not signing it is silly though. It certainly falls on them as well. And then to pretend something that is a rounding error on the budget (0.001%) is too much and that’s why they dug in seems extremely suspect.

Agreed. And the reason the government is currently shut down is because he wants that symbol and he Dems can’t let him have it. It has nothing to do with money. And imo very little to do with border enforcement. This is a political battle over a political symbol and rich political scum are battling it out in DC to see who gets to claim symbolic victory and the US is along for the ride.
