No kidding, genius....
You don't tell someone looking for a budget computer to buy an FX60 do you? How hard is it for you to comprehend. Also, for my uses a cheaper vacuum would probably be a better buy since it's only for a small apartment and I live with only one other person....
You're not quite the sharpest tool in the shed, are you?

Actually, I prove to be more wise as I do not go trolling through a vacuum thread just because someone refuses to buy a $5xx vacuum. Get it through your head that I am only looking for a DECENT vacuum for a DECENT price that I can PICK UP locally. I do not own a home and this is only for keeping the place tidy. Maybe when I have my own place I will pick up a better vacuum but who knows when that is... jesus

For such a simple matter, you sure have gotten your panties in all kinds of bunches, eh? I'm NOT recommending that you get a $500 vacuum, assclown. You already said you want a cheap Wal-mart/Target one for light-duty vacuuming. My point is that you don't have much choice in that area. Just pick out one that matches your drapes, Nancy.

Life isn't that simple. Do you really believe that a $2000 Rainbow works fifty times better than the $40 Wal-Mart special?

To the OP: As a college student on a budget, your best price/performance ratio will be buying USED. Check out your local thrift stores, craigslist, and ebay.

No, it's not that simple across the whole spectrum. But since he's limited himself to the value-line at Wal-Mart/Target, he doesn't have lots of options. He has yet to offer up a price range, other than "Those expensive ones are too much."

Not much advice you can give on that. I'd be willing to bet than most $50 general-purpose vacuums are basically all the same.[/quote]

Well, those vacuums generally range between $50 - $1xx. So if they all perform the same then I would probably pick up whichever appealed to me the most then. That was all that had to be said. I would think brand would come into play but whatever. I thought I heard electroluxes were pretty good.

Ah, a classic argument used to justify spending tons and tons of money on name-brand stuff:p

...I'll admit that you might be right when it comes to vacuum cleaners, I really don't know enough to say. But I'd say the difference in quality among cheap stuff is usually greater than among pricey stuff. Some low-dollar items are quite good, some are complete crap, whereas if you're spending thousands, it's hard to buy something worthless.

The general idea when buying cheap stuff is to NOT get any frills. Cheap stuff that appears to offer all the "features" of the pricey will be shoddy. Cheap stuff that sticks to the basics will probably work well. However, I'm going to edit this and say that's it's worth buying one of two things: (1)Quality new stuff or (2)Quality used stuff, and if you REALLY don't care, (3)Crappy used stuff. Don't spend money to get something crappy, BRAND NEW.

I got a Dirt Devil at Target last year for $70 and it's the best vacuum I'd ever had... After vacuuming our rugs with our old POS vacuum, I used the Dirt Devil and was amazed at how much our old vacuum was missing (the Dirt Devil's dust bin was full after a few short minutes).

I don't see it on Target's website anymore... but this model looks like it has good reviews and is pretty darn cheap:

If you're just picking up a cheap vacuum based solely on price, I don't think you need too much advice.

No need for mocking when you already knew what I was looking for right?

Exactly the reason why I even created this thread was to see what cheaper vacuums were crap. Simple as that....

The link to the one you have doesn't work. My parents have a bissel and it seems to perform okay.

Eureka Optima Bagless Not that expensive, works great. We have one in our apartment, and it works great. It also has good reviews on amazon. And you can get it at Target (at least around here you can.)

One place worth looking might be at a Kirby, Electrolux or the like, dealership. Often they take late model trades of various models, and might resell those for a reasonable price.
Some recondition what were originally some expensive highline vacs, but are considerably cheaper now.

Put down the mouse and head over to Target where you can get the no-frills Roomba Red for $150. You won't have the gee-whiz (and fairly useless) Max mode that the Discovery models have, otherwise it is identical to the Discovery series. Add-ons are interchangeable so you can always buy a charging station, remote control and scheduler later on.

I can't believe no one has said it yet: Every vacuum mentioned in this thread sucks.

My bagless upright is annoying as hell. I have to take it outside to dump out the dirt because even when I open it up dust flies out.
