1) Warsteiner Oktoberfest or Warsteiner Dunkel Weiss - both remarkably balanced and drinkable, and a pretty good price.
2) Redhook Winter Hook - a fantastic winter ale that's not as spicy or heavy as some "winter warmers"
3) Dundee Honey Brown Lager - pretty cheap - usually $12/12 pack near me, nice taste of honey in the finish, and very drinkable

For 25 people... get a couple of kegs :p

We considered getting a keg of champagne, but that would have cost like $20 a person. Probably would have rocked though. A few of my friends are bringing champagne.

a $20 keg of champagne? beer recommendations of Heineken and Corona? Where do you live?

For 25 people, why don't you get a variety of beers and let people choose their favorites?

This, but at 25 people I would seriously consider a keg.

Depending on how long you plan on the party going if you're going to be getting drunk then it's going to be 5-8+ beers per person leaning towards the 8+ if the party goes for more than 4 hours... even cheap domestic beer is going to be $15 for a 24 pack...

You're talking about 150+ beers and $100-$150 if you get more expensive beer... a keg is going to run you about $60-$100 once you get your deposit back and will be about as many beers.

Nobody is going to complain if you get a decent domestic light (If they do, fuck them, free beer is not something a person is allowed to complain about.) and if they want something more exquisite they can bring it.

You don't have to get domestic to get a keg. They have good beer too. You just have to ask the local distributors what they have available.

Very true. I got a keg from a local brewery for my birthday party once, and it was awesome. Only cost about 90 bucks.

I got a keg of Shakespeare stout for my 21st. Hmmmmmm

Don't get to cute with designer beers with a big party - Corona with plenty of lime slices and salt will do, Add in 12 pack or two of Michelob Ultra for variety.

The champange keg was not $20. It was $20 a person. $20 * 25. I'm just going off of what my friend told me, I have no idea if thats an accurate price or not. I think I am going to go after some Blue Moon, Stella, Sierra Nevada, Corona, Michelob Ultra, Dundee Brown Lager, and probably the Redhook Winter Hook. I might look into Babycham, too. HyVee has a deal where you can get a six pack of bottles you pick for $7.50, so why the hell not. Probably getting a case of Corona though :)

Thanks a lot guys...

Meh, you're looking for a light lager, just be done with it and get Pabst Blue Ribbon. It's good shit, and it's cheap.

And since this is a "very formal" party, PBR might be a good choice. Etiquette demands at least PBR when the dress code is black tie.

If it's white tie, you may need to move up to Coors Light.

:p

On a serious note, OP, I'd go with a variety. Lots of decent suggestions already in the thread.

Coors light is crap.
PBR is the best of the cheap lagers.

When I am broke and not buying real beer, PBR is my drink of choice. (My definition of real beer: Belgian quads, strong ales, Belgian triples, imperial stouts, porters, barleywine, or just about any other Ale with ABV above about 7%)

Most other cheap beers have rice in them (because it's cheap, though the brewers will say it makes it "smoother") which make it taste extra watered down (I love rice, but not in my fucking beer.)

people are recommending shit michelob and coronoa?? for a formal christmas party?!?! you said you have a GREAT beer selection at your store, so just pick out a random selection of cool looking beers that arent from the major commercial breweries. almost every microbrewery should have a winter/holiday brew that is made special this time of year. if you have a wide variety of unique beers, everyone will be happy, and it will provide some good conversation material for everyone at the party.

Shiner Bock. It screws me up slowly, and as long as I don't mix I don't get a bad hangover.
