Does anyone know if it's better to hook this mouse up to the PS/2 or USB port? I've currently got it in USB and it does seem a little bit jumpy...

Got mine in the USB slot and it works great!
You might wanna check a few things:
1. Make sure the docking station is at least 8" away from any/every electrical device. i.e. - Computer Case, Monitor, Printer, UPS, etc. etc. etc.
2. Use a white sheet of paper for your mouse to *track* on. The reflectiveness is great and this will help to protect your desktop.
3. Did you install and tweak the latest version of MouseWare?

There are a few other things, but these are the most typical problems.
Just to save my woodgrain keyboard tray, I wrapped it in freezer paper to help the mouse. It actually looks pretty good.

I think there were issues with scrolling with the drivers that came on the cd. The newest drivers online (9.75 I believe) fixed all of that. This mouse is great for gaming or just browsing the web.

The bit about the mouse bieng jumpy, I noticed that too.

Are you for sure that this mouse needs WHITE to move around on to function optimally?

I do have a mouse pad but it's dark blue / black so would getting a white or light color mousepad be better do you think?

In looking through the 3/2 OM Sunday circular, I was unable to locate the add for the MX700. Is this a regional sale, or was it published somewhere other than the Sunday circular?

Page 4 lower right, mojumbo.

BTW, regarding the mouse being jumpy, putting a white sheet of paper under it does reduce the jumpiness but it's a bit awkward. Going try to find a light colored mousepad next...

It's official, it doesn't like these Energizer NiMH batteries. Won't charge them at all, and they're completely drained. $6 down the tube unless I decide to buy the Energizer charger :(

EDIT:

Just noticed on the inside of the battery cover, it states the following:

WARNING
Replace batteries at the end of life with similar type (NiMH 1500-1900 mAh). Both batteries must be same model and capacity.

WTF won't mine charge these batts? 1850mAh NiMH batteries, both brand new.....:|

Caveman2001 quote...
It's valid because I paid for the item in the store. I odered it online, but the transaction was done in the store.

I totally stand corrected!

Thank you zayened!

I called BB to verify the rebate would work since I bought it online for in store pick up and the guy said NO, it would not work.

So, I went back to the store and the CSR desk kindly let me do a return and then a re-charge as if I bought it in the store. Thankfully, everything will work fine now.

I hope other At'ers will read this and know that zayened is correct. Rebates are definitely restricted to how you purchased the item. If it's in store, then there must be an in-store rebate. If it's online, there must be an online rebate. No exceptions!

Thanks for the headsup. You saved me $30.00

Is the Quick Switch Program Selector (the very bottom button under the cruise control) supposed to work right out of the box or do I need to program it with the given drivers. I didn't bother to install the software because I've heard it interferes with some games. Does anyone have info on this?

You will need the Mouseware utility for your mouse to function properly. It's a piece of cake.
Also, I did have problems with the utility in Unreal 2. I would get a mouseware memory address failure. Just turn off the mouseware before you fire up a game if you have problems with it.
Just restart mouseware when you are done playing.
That's what I did.

<sarcasm> Oh GEE. Is that ALL? You mean I only have to turn on/off a program each and everytime I start or finish a game? Well hot damn! I can't believe I haven't already installed the buggy mouseware drivers!</sarcasm>

Seriously, this is a pretty unforgivable error. I can't believe it made it into the driver release and remains unfixed! That said, the mouse is most excellent!

As sexy as this mouse is, I don't really like it all that much compared to my MS Explorer 3.0. The MX700 is shaped better and cordless, but that's about it. It clicks loud and the 3 extra buttons in the center are pretty pointless at the defaults. Plus the USB cable on the base station is way too short. It's supposed to be 8" away from any electronic devices but has to be within 4 feet from your computer?
rolleye.gif

So if it's 4 feet long, that's 48 inches. 40 inches isn't enough length for you? Quite frankly, mine's sitting right on top of my 21" monitor and it hasn't made a bit of difference. Played Quake3 for an hour or two just yesterday with it. I can still use the mouse across the room on my bed.

So what you're saying is...only the most important things are better? ;)
Don't forget that it's resolution is twice that of the intellimouse explorer 3.0.

I couldn't locate a screw hole, either.

At the top right hand corner of the mouse is a little "+" perforation, if you press it with your fingers it goes in. I think that's where the screw hole is. There may be others under the rubber things too, that's where manufacturers like to put them to easily detect tampering. I don't think it's worth opening (at least for now). I think you're right about a metal plate or something though, I thought the batteries were the problem so I pulled them out to see how heavy the mouse would be without them, and the mouse did feel like it was a lot heavier than it should be for a plastic object. The way it felt was like the metal plate is right at the front of the mouse under the S/N sticker.

As for batteries, the thing came with generic 1700 MaH NiMH batteries so pretty much any NiMH of at least 1700 MaH capacity should work fine. If you have a bad set just return and try another set, but let it charge fully until the green light stops blinking.

As for jumpiness and scrolling issues, I noticed that very quickly. The latest drivers on the website fix it, and the mouse works perfectly now (I'm using USB).

Use the latest drivers, the one in the box used to crash constantly. You may not have any issues with the new drivers.

I have them downloaded but I'm hesitating on the pain of rolling back my system if they do cause problems... I guess I can try and then post my results.

I think it was posted in this thread that the PS/2 option causes less problems?

I don't understand using USB for a mouse since that uses up an available port that could be used for other devices. The PS/2 ONLY works with a mouse, so why not use the mouse there? Also, most BIOS, boot disks, boot up utilities, etc will not recognize a USB mouse, but they'll handle a PS/2 just fine.

Anyone care to explain to me the advantage of using USB over PS/2? And I don't count the extra length needed for an adapter behind the computer, because you're not supposed to have the back of your computer pressed up against a wall anyway!

Any suggestions? All the bb's around here tell me the rebate is for the cheesey logitech mouse/kb, and the other bb told me there is no rebates on the logitech mx700 mouse.

It should say on the price tag for the mouse. And it should print out automatically from the register (no matter what they say).

You could always return it if it didn't print out. Just don't open it for a day and take it back.

Even though your <sarcasm> has failed to entertain me, I will be a good AT'er and give you a link about the advantage/disadvantages of USB/PS2.

Sorry if you took that as a personal attack. I didn't mean it that way. What I meant is that it's silly to think having to turn something on/off is anything more than a "tape and glue" solution as it just causes another problem--remembering to do that each and every time!

Thanks for that link. It clearly shows that people who put their mice in USB ports are basically wasting a good USB port, which is what I suspected.

Ok, I just ran Quake 3 Arena (v1.32) and confirmed that the mouseware drivers (v9.75.302) break the scroll button in that game. I guess this happens in UT too, but I don't have that.

I suggest using the mouse through a PS/2 port without loading any drivers whatsoever. This seems to be best and easiest.

This way you get:
-All buttons function properly in ALL applications in their default assignment. (except for the "switch tasks" button that I feel is useless anyway...)
-Mouse compatible with everything including boot disks, OS installs, etc.
-No 5 MB driver running in the backround at all times. It's called EM_EXEC.EXE. Why a driver takes 5 MB, I'll never know...
-Doesn't use up a free USB port that offers no advantage over the PS/2 port anyway. (see above computing.net link)

By installing the drivers you get:
-Ability to program buttons to limited options. (I couldn't find anything better than the defaults.)
-Working "switch task" button.

I consider the battery guage inside mouseware to be useless. That's what the light on the mouse is for. And the fact that you have to go looking in the mouseware menu to find the meter. You're not going to be constantly going into mouseware to look at a meter.

Whaa.. hm... so can anyone think of any good reason to consider using a USB mouse or keyboard ever again then?

EDIT: Shut the computer down. Switched from USB to PS2. Rebooted. Lost use of all extra buttons as the latest driver thinks it's a two button mouse now.
(Jumps around quite a bit on a dark mouse pad just like it does when connected through a USB, by the way.)

Is anyone using this mouse on a dark surface and has no jumping problems with it?

Does anyone have the experience with this mouse that when you roll the wheel the page does not reponse right away. Sometimes I have to rotate the wheel again to move the page down. I never have this kind of slow response with MS mouse. Is that I got a bad mouse or it is normal for logitech? Thanks a lot.
