EDIT: Shut the computer down. Switched from USB to PS2. Rebooted. Lost use of all extra buttons as the latest driver thinks it's a two button mouse now.

Now remove mouseware and all mouse drivers. Reboot.
Add standard "PS/2 compatible mouse" in device manager...or it may autodetect. Basically you want to get it back to how it was when you installed the OS.

Everything should work fine now. Let us know if it doesn't. I've never installed a mouse driver on this XP box (until today), and all I did was plug in the MX700 with the PS/2 adaptor and it worked great.

Whaa.. hm... so can anyone think of any good reason to consider using a USB mouse or keyboard ever again then?
I'm not sure why they were ever even made that way. USB keyboards are REALLY silly. Then you can't ever get in your BIOS w/o plugging in a different keyboard! And at the cost of a free USB port too! I'm sure someday in the future all BIO's will support USB keyboards. Some might already. But until that happens...

I've got the MX500 and using PS2 instead of USB and noticed the same exact thing. In fact, there were times where it would randomly jump to the top of the page if I scrolled the wheel down too fast. There are two possible solutions:

1) Install the latest Logitech drivers. This fixed it, but wasn't a long-term option for me because I lost the scroll wheel in FPS games.

2) Take the damn mouse off the 4-port Linksys KVM switch and plug it directly in the PS2 port of the PC I wanted to use it in most. Apparently the mouse is too much for this KVM.

Hope that helps...

Best buy won't PM for me since they said that with rebate it's actually the same deal

Methinks I jumped on this bandwagon too late. I bought the MX700 from BB-Yorba Linda, CA tonight, got the OM flyer from the car and proceeded to get a PM from Customer Service (sic). The CSR said that OM's price includes a "rebate" and that it was verified. She's said that mouse has been "the bane of her existence" all week. Not wanting to appear that I was well educated on the PM since I "just" purchased it 2 minutes ago, I accepted her answer and left. Tomorrow I'll try another BB and see what happens.

It's obvious that her answer was bogus, and that I could've pushed it - but it may look better if I have a day between the purchase and the PM. What do you guys think, is the deal toast?

read this on firingsquad.com
As detailed by Microsoft's Support Online Knowledge Base, USB signals can be extremely processor intensive (taking up to 10% of the processor with heavy movement), and unfortunately they tended to be somewhat low priority when compared to other system events such as I/O access and video refreshes. On a Pentium 200MMX, a USB mouse takes up anywhere from 10-20% of the CPU during heavy activity. On a P2-400, it can still go up to 11%. From these numbers, it seems that using a USB mouse might actually hurt gameplay, especially on processor-crunching games such as Quake II.

Big thanks to straubs for an excellent call.

Unistall Logitech Driver > Shut down > Switch to PS/2 >
PS/2 port appears to be working with default button options now >
Reinstall Logitech driver to be able to customize the buttons to finally make a clean switch from USB to PS/2.

Conclusions now appear to be:

1. Do not ever use USB for Keyborads or Mice. Use PS/2 connectors for both. This is particularily important for older machines.

2. This mouse seems to require a white mouse pad or a white sheet of paper taped on top of your old mouse pad to prevent sudden cursor jumps. (Correct me if I'm wrong before I call Tech Support to see what they think.)

3. All BB stores have been told not to price match this mouse in an official memo the other day so it is now question of finding someone who hasn't heard about this in BB. But if they know about BB after rebate price being the same as OM's - it's unlikely you 'll get a pricematch but if you feel lucky, I know someone who was able to do it at the register today. (Returns dept already know not to do it...)

I'm using mine (thanks, AT!) on a black mousepad with no jumpiness problems except when I have to pick it up to scroll furthrer across the screen. Then I think the eye detects that as extra movement before it goes out of focus. I'm connected PS/2 without using the Mouseware crap.
I'm tickled with it! :D

Your link points to a review of a different mouse: MouseMan Dual Optical instead of MX700 which doesn't have those setting options.

Well, I don't know what drivers you're using for your MX700, but mine does have those 2 options...and the link wasn't for the review, just the tip on the scroll wheel. Try downloading the newest drivers from Logitech, maybe that will help your search for the drop down menu and check box.

Any ideas as to why mine won't charge this pair of Energizer NiMH batteries? They're 1850mAh, which is within the specified capacity to use.....the advantages of this mouse are severly hindered in my eyes if the base doesn't charge like it's supposed to. I don't want to have to buy batteries all the time.

It's worth a shot. I think your chances are better if you buy today, then go tomorrow for the PM.

Those options are not in MouseWare 9.75.302. The latest on the Logitech site. That review is over a year old.
I don't mean this in a cocky way, but YOU are the one using the outdated drivers.

From logitech:
MouseWare 9.73 or earlier only: Enable Office Compatible Scrolling in MouseWare. To do this, open the Logitech Mouse Properties box and click on the "Buttons" tab. In the Scroller section, place a checkmark in the box labeled "Use Office Compatible scroll only." Click the OK button to close the Mouse Properties box. Now test the mouse.

Hi folks -- thanks for the great deal. I just finally today had time to go get this (I would have on Wed. when I found out about it, but the Best Buys near me were all out), and it worked flawlessly. Went this morning to the Best Buy in Broomfield (between Denver and Boulder) and they had one on the shelf. Went back this afternoon for PM just to be safe, and the customer service rep didn't bat an eye -- actually, she did briefly question the Office Max deal, saying, "Is this price with mail-in rebate?" But I pointed out to her that there was no mention of a rebate in the ad, and she ran it through right away. I did notice they had another MX700 on the shelf behind the customer service desk, though I couldn't tell if it was open or not, so they may not actually be out.

Alright, gotta go charge up my new mouse.

All right. Just talked to Logitech Tech Support.

If you are using this mouse on a dark surface and have no problems with cursor being jumpy, consider yourself lucky, otherwise you need to get a
white mousepad, (maybe other light colored mousepad) or a specially designed optical mousepad.

EDIT: Newer mouse pads appear to work as well regardless of color.

The very lovely service counter chick would not PM to OM--she said that BB had the rebate, so the final price is same as OM's. I tried to persuade her otherwise, but damn--those blue eyes . . .

Anyway, I ended up buying the MX300--the cashier at the regular check out lane PM'd to OM for $20. There's a $10 BB MIR, so final price is $10+tax for the MX300. :(

BTW: The rebate and rebate receipt both printed out after the price match, which I thought was odd. The rebate receipt says "Reg 29.99 with match competitor price" Wonder if I'll have trouble with the MIR.

You must not have gone to the Brown Deer BB, cuz that's where I picked up the last one on the shelf! :D

I was able to pick up two from the BB in Milpitas, CA. I went there yesterday when they were sold out but they said they'd have about 12 in stock the following morning.

Got there at about 1:15 today and to my surprise, there were only 2 left!! After I bought the two, I walked over to OM which is conveniently located right next door. I used their copy machine to make a couple free copies of my receipt and before I left, picked up the OM ad.

Too bad the CSR at the Milpitas BB won't accept the PM. If anybody in San Jose gets a hold of these before Sunday, go to the BB in Blossom Hill. I had to drive all the way down there just to get the price match! Well worth the drive though. I forgot to check if the Blossom Hill BB had any left. Might want to give them a call to check if they have them in stock. Thanks again codeyf for the great deal!!!

Thanks for the info. I was thinking about going to Milpitas BB to try this, but having to PM at Blossum Hill (whereever that is) is too much trouble. I'm sort of happy with my Logitech Mouseman (the original, corded non-optical mouse). Why aren't any of the new mouses shaped like the old Logitech Mouseman? I love the shape of mine. I have a Logitech Mouseman Cordless Optical and the shape is weird.

For all my ATHD people in Columbus, OH go to the Lancaster BB if you want this mouse. They had a whole shelf full of them this evening, and they PMed to OM also this evening, the lady even got her manager's signature on it - talk about not reading memos. They're typically clueless about such things as most people don't really PM around here.

After reading the discussion about PS/2 vs. USB, I think I'm going to uninstall the stupid program (yes, it uses 5MB memory) and switch to PS/2. I had no idea that you could use the mouse with full functionality without the software if you use PS/2.
