I've never liked college type bars, but now I really can't stand it. It's the loud music and obnoxious kids I don't care for. If I go to a bar it's usually a quieter one where they probably have a few recognizeable regulars. They usually don't have as much business so the drinks may be a bit more, but it's worth it to be able to actually talk to the people I'm with without shouting.

What kinda of crappy bars/clubs do you guys have around you? We've got a lot of options that run the gamut from crappy 'ev're one gitting groped' college places to snoozefest shady acres-esque bars so I've merely changed venues as I've gotten older.

I imagine a guy with a popped collar and driving a leased bmw they cant afford when I think of the typical bar guy. This isn't far off from any of them.

This.

We used to have a nice small bar that didn't play loud-ass music and had great staff and food. That was Carey's on Oxford. I enjoyed going there as I got older. Now its catering to the college types and is totally unpleasant going there.

Trying to find a bar like that now is almost impossible. Well, there is The Jazz Supper Club, but that is not my scene.

Bunch of drunk/high....incompetent people all grouped up into one place.

I can't think of a worse place to possibly be in.

Forget about drug addicts, buzzed/drunk people are by far the most annoying bunch on this planet.

Finding "pussy" type of people aside, I also can't think of a worse place to find significant other.

marriage/kids

That shouldn't stop you.

I know married people that go to clubs (can't say it's the brightest thing, but they do it).

My friends wife goes to these ghetto clubs to hang out with bunch of thugs etc......he doesn't seem to mind. He does as well, just not with her....and not the same club.

hehe

I'm pretty sure their marriage has been over for some time though.....

i went to a club 2 weekends ago for a 30th bday party. and it reminded me why i don't like clubs anymore.

- we left at 11pm, took 45 mins to drive to the city cause of traffic and stupid light patterns. then took an additional 40 or so minutes to park.
- got to the club and we were on "the list" because the party paid for a table. had to wait in the "vip" line for a few minutes, then got our wristband. was absolutely no reason for us to wait in a line, and i hate how people think vip is special.
- got inside and it was butt crowded, shoulder to shoulder. the "table" we had (i didn't pay for the husband of the bday girl did) you had to buy 2 bottles of liquor to have. bottle of vodka was $170, the champaigne was like $200.
- table area was stacked on top of another table, again, being crowded as shit.
- took like 10 minutes to get a drink at the bar because of the crowd and few bartenders.
- was there for 2 hours and got my bill and it was $140

it was a really fun time, but i'd just rather do other stuff with my time/money than that. even the birthday girl was like 'yeah last time i do that'. it used to be fun when younger to feel "special" from the vip, and having a table, and all that shit, but i've grown out of all that.

EDIT:

that said, whenever i go on vacation i love going to clubs or just going out in general. like if it's a week long vacation like 2-3 nights i wanna go to a club/lounge area. i think the funnest clubs i've been to are in cancun. its like $30 to get in but it's all you can drink all night. and they are huge.

Cost.
And no one goes anymore, so therefore I don't either.
Otherwise it was generally good times.

The only time I went to a bar was in college when there was a local one that would serve beer to 18 year olds. I don't see the point if I can purchase the beer myself for cheaper.

I still go, but to select bars.

I prefer quieter places, I guess pubs would be a more accurate term. Usually when we go, we go for dinner and stay after for drinks. Though I will say I've had some really good times at bars. Like loud music and tons of people. I think those days are behind me though.

Now that my friends (and soon me!) have either houses or part of a duplex with backyards, we often go to someones house to grill and drink.

for me it was a number of reasons.

1. Too much smoke. it was disgusting back then. your clothes needed to be washed badly after going out. yuck.

2. drunk loud-mouthed jackasses. I am sure many on here have dealt with this. they are usually looking for a fight; acting all tough and shit. the women were almost as bad.

3. dumbass bouncers. acting like they owned the place. trying to pick up any decent looking chic that came in. did you enjoy having your shoulder dislocated? next time don't put your hands on me for no reason.

4. lechers. random guys trying to pickup anything with a pulse. normally I don't care, but when you try this with my GF I tend to get angry. If a women tells you to get lost then do it. Don't make me have to do it for you. I shouldn't have to waste my time dealing with your stupid ass.

I was usually the designated driver, so I was sober and able to see all the BS around me. Going to bars was fun for a while but then it wore off and the fun was gone.

HUGE difference between bars and clubs. Who doesn't go to bars- my dad and my gramps still do.

And asking this in a tech forum is going to bound in a circlejerk.

During my clubbing days (which wasn't much), my brush with such douchebags and drunken retards were always minimal.

Where do you guys go? You gotta go to places that are semi-classy and require proper dress 21+. Not 18+ trashy places by the beach like the ones in Jersey Shore show.

The troublemakers are rare or just simply avoid them. Most are friendly and have a good time.

[edit]
...maybe you should stop being a doormat designated driver and go to have fun for yourself. :) Fvck them you know? Life is too short to be so uptight and doing crap for others all the time.

I just got tired of the whole routine of drinking heavily in environments that sucked and cost way too much for what you got.

I dropped smoking and drinking cold turkey in 2003 and didn't have a sip of a drink for 1 year.

Now I'll on rare occasion have a few beers, some wine or a mixed drink but that's about it.

Well, all my friends go out so they can get laid. I've been getting laid consistently for five years so I never really needed to worry about it :p.

Also bars are expensive, full of morons, etc

Once in a blue moon me and the GF will go out to a club with some friends to have a good time, but thats about it.

I never started to begin with.

pretty much this - only went to a couple clubs while in college with friends. Peer pressure I tell you! Didn't like the scene, liked the scenery, but not the scene. Anything involving alcohol... ugh.

Went every weekend for about 3 yrs when I lived in Arlington.. now I'm old and I'm sick of getting hammered drunk.. just outgrew it. Don't really drink that much anymore. I'd rather go to a sportsbar or a karaoke bar instead. Something else to do besides getting drunk. You know?

 Only reason I ever go in a bar these days is while waiting to be seated for dinner.

I never go to clubs. Too loud, too crowded. I prefer a place where I can actually hear the people I'm trying to talk to.
