I lived near a college town and loved going to the "college bars" during the summer. They were ghost towns and the drink and food specials were dirt cheap. $2 burger baskets and $2 pints of "premium" beers.
2 things that I hated about them at night/during busy times.
1) Smoking. Hated coming home and smelling like an ashtray. Usually stripped down in the garage and left my close there overnight to air out you would smell that bad.
2) Absolutely blasting music. If I want bowel shaking loud music I'll go to a concert. Otherwise I want it subtle and in the background so I'm not shouting at the top of my lungs to converse with a person 2 feet from me. That's just not enjoyable.
IL & IA both made smoking in bars illegal now, so that removed #1. But I still avoid most places that fall into #2.
I still like going to small, intimate bars/pubs that have music at modest levels where you can easily talk to other people, play darts without coming away with a splitting headache, and just generally relax and have fun.
I've never been a club person. Just not my thing.
