I don't think the answer is, "because it's a tech site" anymore.

I do. The vast majority of "tech age" and somewhat computer savvy women I know aren't interested in discussion forums outside of the social networking sites. And those that are usually aren't on tech boards. That's just the way it is.

Hell, the vast majority of computer savvy men I know aren't frequenting boards like this. AT, and similar sites, remain the realm of "techno-geeks".

Agreed. Hardly an AT only thing.

My best guess with this is that they search, then they're here, they sign up, get an answer to the IT question they asked and have no idea what to do next. They see threads by froot loops, snake-man, and whomever else and think "what did I just click" - they are confronted with predominated male threads with male advice and ideology.

They don't seem to feel the need to conform with the "yez I has agree" "qft" IT consensus that we try to reinforce on each other. Only relationship wise. So they find L&R and it's "oh! so" perfect, their area of expertise that man has yet to master. So that is where they can profess their knowledge, intuitiveness and opinion(s).

Haha...actually that makes a lot of sense. And let's face it - most women do know a hell of a lot more about relationships than most guys here.

You know, I just realized I've never really seen a REAL female troll post around anywhere. The odds of that are probably like 0.0000001%. Excluding the troll types over like 50+ years of age though, that's my exception to this. Those are really common.

And alas, pity the arcadio situation.

1. Why would they arrive here? It's not like most women are doing searches that would result in AT as the top result.
2. Perusing the forums, why would they sign up here? L&R is invisible until you sign up and the other forums don't have a lot of topics that are compelling reason for a female to sign up.
3. Assuming they did sign up, why would they stay here? Until you're over a few hundred posts you're assumed to be a male with a second account (frequently true even if you don't claim to be female), subjected to pics requests, receive few if any serious answers and many gals start off with the big mistake of "hi, I'm a girl!" post which is never a good path.

Plus this

Girl, I keep the arguments oral around here. No fisticuffs .

Then after we're done verbally sparring, we can have steamy make-up. Just let me know where I should aim ;).

the pc idea that men and women are exactly the same is a faulty assumption to base such questions on.

theres a reason the old cliche of the spousal acceptance factor exists when it comes to home tech.

there simply are fewer girls interested in this level of tech minutia.

you might as well ask why there aren't more women in prison:p clearly if they make up 11 times less of the total prison population it must be sexist men making prisons unwelcoming place for the womens.

This is similar to why I joined. BF is a member and he convinced me to join for OT. I have little interest in computer hardware and zero interest in shopping for 'hot deals' so I never would have come here otherwise. I stayed for the laughs and for the wealth of information on a variety of topics and current events and also, for the different perspectives on these topics and current events.

Perhaps one reason (not the only one) why there are few women on Anandtech is that many of the 'men' here do not have girlfriends or wives to mention the site to.

Also, I know a few sensitive women who can't take a joke who would likely become offended very quickly and not stick around.

well if you need someone to drag you to the site its just another reason why there would be less females anyways. its not as guys drag each other to anandtech, it just happens when you are looking up this stuff, certainly women don't have to be dragged to fashion sites.

you might as well wonder why not more men are going to feministe or feministing sites which are really far more sexist and exclusionary than tech sites.

Go to the other ladies forums, it's quicker. Otherwise we have to do a revamp on the ATOT members talk habits (which is harder imo)

Quick search, I found these sites inhabited by primarily women on boardreader:
