Real reasons why there is scant female presence on Anandtech

Females definitely seem to gravitate more towards deal/sweepstakes sites, which as you stated is what drew you here. AT hasn't been a front runner in hot deal posting for years now (debatable whether or not it was even in 2001).

It's Websense. They have a time-based quota option. I think they essentially act as a proxy, tracking time spent online per day. It expires at midnight, resets to 60 minutes.

That's not a bad system. It splits the difference between being total dicks, and allowing carte blanc usage.

Yeah. Sometimes I'm actually looking up stuff for work, so I appreciate the quota time for that in addition to personal use. It would be a real pain if I couldn't have that time at all.

Google says AT Hot deals comes up 7 or 8th (there is a subset of Slick Deals) when you search "Hot Deal"

When searching for "Hot Deals" it comes up as the third result on the second page. A number of results on the first page seem to be hotel/travel deals though.

unfortunately... they are mostly using social networking sites like facebook and stuff, hell, i have more female friends that i know on facebook than regular guys that i know here.

Most women use internet forums to talk about celebrities, purses, shoes and other fashion. Also, for shopping for those same things. AT provides none of that except hot deals (which is actually not very participatory). WE post in hot deals because we are here all the time, but a new user would never pick AT as the hot deal site they contribute to - FatWallet or Slickdeals would probably get them. So even if females do find that subforum, I don't see that enticing them to participate in the rest of the site or forums.

If we had subforums for the typical female interests it wouldn't even matter because there are other sites that already serve that need. It's the same reason we would never post on fashion forums - even if they created a Computers section.

That's pretty surprising to me.

I don't know how well that translates into traffic, but probably does well for a single phrase.

Sure there is. And 99% of the time it's males aiming nasty words at other males. The 1% aimed at our female population is usually particularly vile, but it only attracts as much attention as it does because the female involved almost always practically revels in it.

Even North Korean-style moderation isn't going to change the behaviour of male teenagers around here. I think the administrators around here realize that now. So swim with the sharks or log off forever, ladies - the site's not going to change to suit you.

couple of things here i don't agree with.

i don't revel in vile nasty words directed at me. you just implied that. The reason only 1% of such is aimed at the female population is because that is the percent we represent.

Also, don't agree that the moderators have given up on the poor behavior here of the "male teenagers" or anyone for that matter. the moderators here are on people for such behavior and they do a pretty damn good job.

i've been swimming with the sharks, as you put it, mostly because i like the large percentage of people here, and we swim side by side nicely. this thread is an attempt to see why other people think there are few females here as I would like to see more of them.

I think it is because few women post on forums of any kind. At least not a single one I know.

Look up forums for pregnancy or infant care and let me know what you find. I would think woman are more social than men. If they find a forum they like, I would imagine they would be frequent visitors.

BF at the time was a member, I was at college with nothing to do (just been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis so I had a hard time getting around) and I was bored so I checked out the site he had mentioned.

This is similar to why I joined. BF is a member and he convinced me to join for OT. I have little interest in computer hardware and zero interest in shopping for 'hot deals' so I never would have come here otherwise. I stayed for the laughs and for the wealth of information on a variety of topics and current events and also, for the different perspectives on these topics and current events.

Perhaps one reason (not the only one) why there are few women on Anandtech is that many of the 'men' here do not have girlfriends or wives to mention the site to.

Also, I know a few sensitive women who can't take a joke who would likely become offended very quickly and not stick around.
