The majority of the people I know who have a bracelet didn't even donate any money, they got it from someone who did. Which is pretty much saying oh look yeah i support cancer research cause i'm wearing a bracelet, but I won't donate money of my own cause I already have a bracelet. I think its just disgusting as a whole that people need incentives to donate, and its now turned into a popularity contest.

You're making the same argument as the OP, which is pretty much invalid.

That is all for now.

Acquaintances Worried Guy Without LIVESTRONG Bracelet is Pro-Cancer

Friends and family members of San Francisco accountant Jack Robinson have begun to assume he must like cancer since he is the only person they know who isn?t wearing a yellow LIVESTRONG bracelet.

?I thought I knew Jack. I raised him better than that,? said Claire Robinson, his mother. ?How can he support cancer? Both of his grandfathers died of cancer. It?s just despicable.?

The yellow LIVESTRONG bracelets have become a nationwide fad over the past few months ? even campaigning politicians have taken to wearing them so they are not accused of being pro-cancer. Yet Robinson refuses to donate one measly dollar to the Lance Armstrong Foundation to receive his own yellow band and make a public stance against the disease that kills 500,000 Americans each year.

?Half a million people each year in this country alone are killed by cancer, yet he doesn?t seem to care,? said co-worker Ron Singley. ?It?s as though he has no conscience. I?m disgusted by him.?

But Robinson says his decision not to wear a LIVESTRONG bracelet does not mean he is pro-cancer; in fact, he claims to be anti-cancer.

?I just don?t want to wear a stupid yellow bracelet,? he said. ?And to be honest, I?m getting sick and tired of all these people with LIVESTRONG bracelets looking down on those of us who don?t wear them. I can?t even believe I have to say this, but I?m very much against cancer. Okay? I?ve even donated money to cancer research in the past, I just don?t want to wear one of those bracelets. They?re uncomfortable and they look dumb hanging out of people?s sleeves? That?s all.?

Robinson?s wife, Molly, says she has yet to confront her husband about his LIVESTRONG-free wrists because she is afraid of what she might hear.

?I don?t want to face the truth ? that he?s pro-cancer,? said Mrs. Robinson. ?I don?t think I could be married to a man who is a cancer supporter. It?s like I?m living with so kind of monster.?

because he would sure as sh*t would want them to find a cure pronto, and not be concerned with who was wearing bracelets, but only the bottom line - the money.

wtf? if the person told you "live strong" in response to the bracelet then they told you what it was. if you didn't understand what they meant then question further.

i am failing to see your point.

You forgot to picture in your mind the tone that it is delivered in, and the dismissive nature of it.
Again: your personal experiences have nothing to do with the whole program. It's like saying Fords suck because a Ford driver cut you off this morning.

What if a ford cut you off once a week; would it be ok to say that you are sick of fords?
LMAO.....I rest my case.

Owned.

It's obvious the OP is just standing on their little soap box. Someone call the Waaaaaambulance.

It wouldn't. I have strong enough feelings about cancer already. In fact that may be why I hate those bracelets so much. If the people I know really cared about the organization they would find a lot more effective and tactful ways to help the cause.

Why don't you do some reasearch on the money this campaign has raised then see if your thoughts are still supported by this statement. At least a million of the bracelets have been sold, if I remember what I read about them when they first started, Nike is putting up the donation of the bracelets, so it's not like you are buying the bracelet and the rest goes to charity, it means that AT LEAST, the ABSOLUTE BARE MINIMUM that has been raised is 1 Million dollars. Good luck getting that from anywhere else. 1 million dollars is something to be proud about, and encouraging the average person to donate even just a dollar because all they want is the bracelet is a good strategy.

All in all, it doesn't matter whether the bracelets are a trendy thing or not, they ARE helping raise money.

From someone whose family has had its scares and tragedies from cancer (ranging from my grandmother to my freaking DOG), I love the idea of these bracelets, and I will call you out on the fact that you may have lost someone close to you to cancer. Anyone that has truly seen the pain that someone and their family goes through when they are suffering from cancer appreciates everything that can be done in the way of cancer research, from a school raising a slim couple hundred dollars by collecting student's change after lunch to the livestrong bracelets, every bit could change it all.

It seems to me that you are just angry because you hate to see people catch on to trends. Go bitch about abercrombie or something, because you will be hard-pressed to find information about how the livestrong bracelets are worth bitching about.

I've already found plenty to complain about. I'm glad they raised lots of money. That doesn't change how I feel about many of the people actually wearing the bracelets. If you donate $100 then you get 100 bracelets, I believe. Which means that there are potentially 99 people who did nothing to obtain the bracelet but will be sure to show it off. So sue me for being tired of it.

Oh no people are "calling me out". What shall I do? I guess I'll have to tell my family that, because someone on the internet "called me out", I must now excavate the bodies of our relatives and allow CSI to examine them.

I've got a jacket in the works with ribbons of about any/every size, shape, and color. That way, when I go out, I'll just have all the bases covered.

the bracelet is a symbol that you support the cause. it also causes others to inquire and so spreads the word about the charity. however, there are idiots that just follow the trend and buy one without even knowing what they are doing. they want to be fashionable and so forth. those are the people that piss me off. but even then, did the bracelet not get the person to "donate"? yes it did. these bracelets are a fast and relatively cheap way to spread the word about this charity.

What's even more amusing is that Americans don't care about cycling, they care about an American winning.

heh not all Americans. i have been interested in cycling since i was 12 years old when Lemond (sp) won them.

Also i enjoy riding in armature race's and charity events. While i suck at it (short and stocky does not make for a good cyclist) i do enjoy knowing how the pro's do.

Torpid,
really man, who gives a sh!t if people wear a yellow bracelet- how does that concern you in any way? i dont see how its offensive and should warrant such an agitated response. torpid, you just need to STFU and mind your own business. i have yet to have any person wearing a livestrong bracelet act anally to me. should i be pissed at everyone who decides to wear nike shoes because they all think they're michael jordan? furthermore, i agree that it is largely "fashion" and people are doing it to jump on the bandwagon. but then again, i dont see how its any different from other types of comformity. mind you, i doubt everybody you've met with the yellow armbands are self-righteous snobs. At the worst case displaying the bracelet is trivial, but i can hardly understand how it could offend you.

The Lance Armstrong feel-good hero story ended when he cheated on his wife and kids and divorced her.

I respect him for his drive to be a champion, but not for personal integrity. He's a has-been hero imo.

Done. And, not that I'm saying anything new here, but torpid, you're an idiot. So what if these bracelets have gotten trendy? Who cares? Charity is a good thing, whether it's being donated to by the ignorant or not. I ALSO have friends and family who have/have died from cancer.. just about every one of us does. And you know what? Most of these individuals support these bracelets. Just get over yourself.
