Rottweilers are pretty intelligent dogs - its just their stereotypical owners that are not that bright. :)

Border collies are pretty smart too. But yeah Golden Retrievers are smart dogs.

**EDIT**
You will find that most of the smart dogs were good for tracking, hunting, or herding.

I've never heard of them. Why are they considered as the dumbest breed?

dang my dogs are ranked 72, beagle.i think the people giving the tests have no real way to test a dogs intelligence. by the looks of it they are judging by which dogs can inteact and relate to humans the best. that doesnt mean squat considering we are one of the least intelligent forms of life when it comes to self preservation.

I was thinking of the same thing. Seems to be the other way around no?

It shouldn't be a ranking of intelligence, but rather of obedience.

I was looking around at the rest of the site and I started to wonder - why exactly are Dog Shows popular.

I mean, congratulations, you found or bred a dog that has uniform color, is within tight height/weight tolerances, ad will let you examine his testicles without issue. Now, here's your medal, you special person you!

Beagles generally don't fare well in tests like that because once they get on a scent they will ignore everything while following it. We won't let ours out in the back yard unleashed even though it is fenced in because of that.

Definitely not imo. But certainly top 5.

Personally I would have put German Shepards as #1 and Australian Cattle Dog at least in the top 5. I also think it's a crime thet the Siberian Husky is down at #45. Should also be top 10.....but then again, I'm not going to claim to know more than the AKC.

Doberman's are extremely trainable....I'm wondering what the criteria for "intelligence" is here.
