Let's say the texture issue is fixed (via patch obviously). Would this game still be worth it at full price?

I was extremely close to pre-ordering this one but decided to wait. I'm so glad I did and the Ars review cemented that decision. I was just wondering if there are some people here that are enjoying the game despite it's technical flaws.

Well so far I think the game is fun, the gunplay feels good and gunning down the enemies is pretty satisfying (good hit detection and really good animations). I've only played like 45min but I was pretty impressed with the way enemies swing around the terrain and jump around.

Anyway I bought this because I'm bored with every single player shooter having some kind of "RPG" element (especially post-apocolyptic ones) so I find this game kind of refreshing. I would wait for it to drop price though, 60$ is definitely way too much.

Its pretty much the reason why I bought it. I thought Borderlands got extremely boring once you realized you level up to get new weapons, which are essentially the same weapons, to kill the same enemies just at a higher level. Over and over and over and over and over. I stopped playing Fallout 3 after awhile because I was tired on crawling through the desert at like 1 ft/s. Yeah yeah, I'm a packrat, but freakin weapons break and you need to upgrade your aim...you didnt see Mad Max's shotgun wear out or upgrade his aim.

Its funny, but I have less tolerance for an RPG shooter than for an RPG like Mount and Blade. Anyways, I just want to run around in the post apocalypse and f people up Mad Max style, and this is the closest I'm gonna get to that.

Wow, I am glad I resisted the temptation to pick this up during BB's $20 off two pre-order deal. This is much worse than the dead island release issues haha

Common folks if you have tearing and vsync related issues just enable it in your nvida control panel or catalyst, (more then likely its set to "let the application decide") it also takes the texture pop in away... this isnt rocket science

That pop-in looks bad, I would guess this game is going to need some driver updates to get it running right. Both AMD and Nvidia have released drivers specifically for this game, so I think it'll maybe take a little while for them to get it right. It might even need something like lots of fast system memory and SSDs to take care of the texture streaming, or it might just be not great code (i.e. optimized to take advantage of the extra PC capability).

I really hope the next gen of consoles will help improve the texture pop-in. Its pretty bad in UE3 games, some do a bit better with it than others. While its not game breaking, its noticeable enough to be a distraction.

as for the review--the technical flaws don't bother, as I think most conscious people should assume such things on release anyway.

what bothers me is the apparent lack of depth with story, shallow characters, useless side missions, and false open world atmosphere. Though the review does read rather bitter and so it may be over-zealous. If opinions here don't convincingly reflect the Ars review, then I will purchase when on sale.

Yeah the technical aspects, especially on the PC should be able to be alleviated. Hopefully they'll figure out the backend so that you can adjust some settings (someone mentioned V-Sync, which sometimes can be a necessity).

Looking around, it seems that the console versions are getting decently good reviews (8+), but its a pretty hyped game, and that's almost typical. Really, if a console game is one of the best looking there is, it automatically will get about a 7. If the game isn't complete crap it'll do better than that.

I think the overall consensus will likely be that its not a terrible game, but never really lives up to its potential. Often, I find these more disappointing. Its got what appears to be a pretty great game engine behind it, and other aspects are ok, but just needs more.

Even if you don't like it, I do think its actually a big improvement for id. The tech seems better than their last game engine (or at least it looks better and I think will hold up better), and they are showing that they're trying to make more in depth games. I think they just need some more help to get there, but, to me it is progress.

To me, this is a game that I think would have been great if they had done something interesting gameplay wise. Like allow you to build your own guns. Want a gun that combines a sniper rifle and a sawed off shotgun? Ok. Triple barrel sniper? Sure. Take several machine guns and make a mini-chaingun? Yep. It wouldn't need a full on leveling system or anything like that, but just allow you some extra ability to alter your gameplay experience. Plus having a "smith" in the towns would have helped with fleshing out the NPCs. Getting things you can use for gun building would also make fetch quests much less tedious too.

VSync has never fixed texture pop-in issues for me.

Also, that's kinda pretentious and condescending. I mean, com on, common folks? :awe:

The pop-in textures are really strange. Once you notice them, you can literally spin in a circle and watch it happen over and over, like only the players field of view is ever fully rendered. Even inside small areas this occurs, so it isn't a distance or too much to render issue.

However, I am using the BF3 beta drivers.

The GPU transcode option seemed to help things a bit for me. It really is a nice looking game. Despite it clearly being a console game.

So...apparently all that preorder money went to console developement. I mean, they HAD to have tested it on a PC with current drivers. Oh wait...

According to the catalyst creator twitter feed there's going to be new rage drivers in a few hours for AMD. The problems I'm having are more than just pop in though I get horrible corruption and a bunch of stuff flickering and tearing.

This is the question I have, does developers even play the game on a PC before releasing it? Why would you even release a game if you knew is is this bad? It is not like this is a problem on some specific hardware configuration that they might not have tested, this seems to be a problem with the entire platform.

Heh...preordered it a couple days ago on a whim (even though I knew better than to buy at full price) cause I need a new game that doesn't take hours of playtime for each sitdown in order to make progress (i.e. non-MMO). A shooter doesn't necessarily need more than decent graphics and good gameplay...how does it rate there as long as you don't have AMD stuff? I'll give it a shot this week sometime.

Got the game, tried it on my 2600k/6970. HORRIBLE performance. Also, the texture pop in was beyond horrible and the flickering in game and menus was unplayable. I tried the Rage specific drivers posted on 10/3, and they actually performed worse. I got angry and walked off and got lunch, when I came back I saw AMD put out new Rage drivers dated for 10/4. Tried those, everything is better. MUCH better performance, no pop in, no flickering, all is well in the world.

Finally got my copy in, and I'm installing it right now. I hope I don't get screwed with texture pop in and all that other garbage!

Damn, it's taking a long time just to install this game! 21GB install! 😱
