It isn't the guys PC that is the issue, it seems just about everyone is having this issue.

With the rig in my sig I got very little pop in, nothing close to what that video is like, but it was nonetheless noticeable.

After I left that very first area, the first 30 seconds of the game, I haven't noticed any pop in since.

I'm only an hour in. Game is very pretty, stunning I would say, and I like the art direction a lot. I feel a disconnect with the shooting/action mechanics so far in my play. I mean the game feels very very fast and immediately responsive, but I think ive gotten used to a cover system in recent titles ive enjoyed and Rage doesn't have a developed cover system.

Just curious cause the 2 reviews posted here say the same thing, that the game is stunning to look at, but how can it be so with texture pop like that?

With the texture pop in that youtube vid, the game would be unplayable IMO. I personally havent seen anything near that bad, perhaps others with Rage can post their experience and we can find a common factor.

When I saw the texture pop in that area I was concerned, though the concern quickly dissolved when I moved past that opening area and the texture pop stopped completely, I mean 100% stopped.

Wow, Ars Technica slammed this game. This is for the 360 version. They'll be reviewing the PC version shortly.

My favorite quote from that review...
Imagine Borderlands with the fun stripped out, or Fallout without actual choice, characters, or consequences. None of the game's ideas are thought out or fully explored, so the game feels like a series of dead ends in a world that is hard to care about, in which you play a bland character doing boring things against stock enemies using weak guns. I only finished RAGE because I was paid to do so, and the process was a struggle; the game never presented me with a hook to continue playing

Yikes!

and:

The best games are created when a team is passionate about some aspect of the experience: be it the lead character, the setting, the story, or a new game mechanic. There is nothing about the characters, setting, story, or mechanics in Rage that's interesting, new, exciting, or fun. It feels like a group of people had to create a game because they were under contract, not because they honestly enjoyed any aspect of their own creation. This is a great tech demo for the engine, and that's all. It's merely competent, but never special.

Double yikes. Sorry iD, Carmack is apparently the only creative person left there and he just does engines.

check this texture out

So basically Borderlands at the 8 hour mark? I looked a little bit at the GiantBomb Quick Look and it doesn't look that bad. Ars's reviewer is hit and miss with me.

I had high hopes for this game but i'm gonna give it a miss. Red Orchestra 2 will keep me busy, i'm really loving it. As soon as i saw those textures posted above it put me right off, that's just pure laziness to me but then i think it was designed to run first and foremost on consoles to be fair, actually one can tell this as this game has zero graphics options other than resolution and AA, such a shame.

Na, BS, fired it up just to see that problem, but the scene flows like butter on a hot pan. Nada. total butter.

These problems they talk about ? Likely to be cause by pos equipment / drivers/users.

Bet when I get to that phone against the wall scene, someone will be talking on it but low end equipment will never know.

Oh great, instead of having to find keys, the player has to run around in circles talking to people?

The youtube video linked above looks terrible.

This comment makes me want to buy the game. :awe:

I have mixed feelings about this game so far. I think the gunplay feels fine and gunning down the bandits is pretty enjoyable. Graphics-wise the lack of vertical sync is really annoying as is the texture pop-in. I really wish they would let people play with the settings, I would rather have a lower frame-rate without the annoying pop-in.

Also, is anyone else with an AMD card getting crazy graphics corruption? It's so bad for me at parts my gun is and terrain are flickering. I didn't try disabling the steam overlay, hopefully it's just that.

EDIT: Just to add, my texture pop-in isn't as bad as that youtube video, the textures pop in a lot faster and in most areas I only notice it if I'm turning really fast.

I wish I had not had so many vodka sodas last night and plopped $60 on this pile. What a disappointment.

The ARS review is really spot on. Skip this one guys. Bummer

PS. I can confirm the texture pop-in is atrocious on the PC, and they all look quite "consoleized" for lack of a better word.

Let's say the texture issue is fixed (via patch obviously). Would this game still be worth it at full price?

I was extremely close to pre-ordering this one but decided to wait. I'm so glad I did and the Ars review cemented that decision. I was just wondering if there are some people here that are enjoying the game despite it's technical flaws.

ooo, this will be awesome come X-mas sale.

this now leaves Guild Wars 2 as the only game this year (I hope) that truly interests me.

as for the review--the technical flaws don't bother, as I think most conscious people should assume such things on release anyway.

what bothers me is the apparent lack of depth with story, shallow characters, useless side missions, and false open world atmosphere. Though the review does read rather bitter and so it may be over-zealous. If opinions here don't convincingly reflect the Ars review, then I will purchase when on sale.

So my pre-order from Newegg will be arriving today. Already looked and they don't accept returns on it I think.

Anyone know of B&M stores that will take it back unopened for a no receipt cash refund? I know Walmart should do it, but will issue a gift card.
