Thats because you have a GF and not a WIFE.

Trust me, they change. Especially once you have a few kids... suddenly, priorities in life is completely different, because SHE says so!

You think the R290/X is LOUD???

Never seen my parents consult each other on anything unless it's like a 10k+ purchase. Otherwise, they just purchase what they want.
I really don't get the "Wife said NO!!!!" thing.
Unless money is real tight of course. Then well, I understand.
A lot of the US is living very close to the "edge" (best house, cars etc. they can afford). So when you're living no where close to that, I guess things are more enjoyable.

This Is a cover story for your marijuana grow :p.
OP...you sir.....ROCK.

You have a hobby...we all do. No need to justify. Some would say I spend too much on cars guns restaurants and gambling.....with computers a very distant 5th.....my off road toy makes no sense for what it costs. Oh well!

Enjoy!

PS best prank ever if you had shown us a 17 inch monitor. :p

Its not the expense per se.. its the fact the partner (usually wife!) or significant other will not let you spend some $$ for such a setup. It's considered a "waste of $$" by most people.

In this situation costs definitely do come into the equation. That's probably $5000 or better on computer equipment and many hours on setup. Having a spare$5000 to spend on a hobby is definitely not the norm.

The last 2 sentences in this statement are what a lot of people don't understand. Nearly everyone tries to max out their budget when buying pricey things. When we bought our house my wife was pissed that i was undercuting our budget by a huge sum. Now for the last several years we pretty much do what we want financially even with kids. Having good credit is a key too. Again, something the bulk of Americans fail at.

I know what you guys are saying but she already knows where I stand :p

I will still keep a budget for this hobby there are way bigger expenses in my life already i'm not too worried. I don't consider my rigs excessive in terms of cost and how long systems last these days the major upgrades aren't as frequent as they use to be which is alot easier on the pocket book.

As for kids were still not sure on that already talked about it!

And yes things change as you grow older and life moves on but trust me I will still be doing what I love.

Looking good more pics!!!

Look, you're obviously a bit young... and so is your relationship if you're still unsure about having kids. And, you have an i7 970 still... So clearly you're not going out and buying the latest gear every few months like a lot of these guys. In other words, you're not in the same league as the PC enthusiast who dedicates their living room to a bombastic warhead of a graphics pumping toaster oven with custom made stickers. I'm right there with ya, and I don't get told how to spend my money either, but that's probably because we take care of what's important first, and she knows it. In fact my girl buys me things I want for my hobbies.

KaRLiToS: First, my hat is off to you for exquisite detail. What 2011MB are you using? Asus Rampage IV? Is the case a Corsair 900D or a custom? How many 120mm rad spaces have you allocated for cooling both the cpu and 4 gpus? Is this a single or dual loop custom system?

4 290x waterblocks will need that big external rad! I'm using a XSPC RX360 and EX 360 for just my 3930k @ 4.4Ghz and 2 GTX 670s in SLI (EK and XSPC water blocks) I believe BrightCandle uses a formula of Total Watts thermal output/130 = # of 120mm rads at 800rpm fan speed (he can chime in if I mistated it)

I overcalulated my cpu at 250W (most measurements are 170-180W) plus @ 200 W per card (670 is 170W stock but I overclock). That is 650/130 = 5 rad spaces. My RX 360 and EX360 give me 6 rad spaces (120mm) so I should be fine.

For 4 290x cards at 400W per card = 1600 plus 250 for the CPU =1850.

1850/130 = @ 14 rad spaces. From your picture your one external has 9 spaces plus the rear of the case one of 3 plus, I assume 1 internal of 3 gives you plenty.

Well, was not there that an veteran user posted to us that he need a 1,4KW PSU to power a 5Ghz 3930K with two 780s at 1360Mhz??

Link? at some point you hit the limits of what a 6-pin a 8pin and PCI slot can do.

My girlfriend and I are both 33.

And were not sure about children because they are a pain in the ass lol and we've seen what everyone else has gone through. While I understand the assumption about my age and children some people just don't want them also!

The reason i'm still on my 970 is there hasn't been any need for me to upgrade other than GPU's. My system plays everything out well and i'm waiting to see what Haswell E will bring.

Were not in the early 2000s anymore when upgrading on regular was kind of required. You can build a quadcore system now and with minimal upkeep it will last your 3-4 years no problem. That was not possible in the past, i've grown out of the keeping up with the jones mentality that is popular on the forums because times of changed. I can afford to easily drop $3000 but to play console ports :p I think not!

If the need arises I will do the neccessary with my builds but it hasn't been there for many years. Right now i'm more concerned about redoing my Home theater setup :)

So this rig is to play Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced, right? :p

Congrats, it's a great looking setup. I'm interested to see what some benchmarks will look like.

Depends on priorities. I spent 5K on my race car. (Spec Miata) and then it costs about $700 a race weekend.

If it's something you really want to do, you find ways to get the money.

I'm 29, I have a month old boy. And no I am not rich. But I love this hobby very much.

As for the sofa, its a futon that my parents gave me when I left the house 3 years ago.
Actually, the PC room is the guest room. Yes I know the futon is ugly :) .

Some people asked me about the water cooling system, this is how it goes.

  1. Reservoir
  2. Dual D5 Pumps with EK D5 Dual top serial
  3. Feser X-Changer 240mm Radiator (Push/Pull)
  4. Quad R9 290x Quad Semi-Parallel Blocks
  5. Feser X-Changer 480mm Radiator (Push/pull)
  6. D5 Pump with Ek Top
  7. WaterCool Mo-RA3 Pro 1080mm radiator (Push)
  8. Feser X-Changer 360mm Radiator (Push/Pull)
  9. RIVE VRM Block
  10. EK Supremacy CPU Block
  11. RIVE PCH Block
  12. Back to reservoir

Its a little overkill  Everything is in serial.
TO not damamge the third pump, I bleed the loop with only two pumps which is already quite good and when the loop is full of water, I turn on the third pump for a boost of water flow.

Quad damage indeed, will say this is the sickest tower set up i have ever seen and the whole Quake theme just makes it even better.

The worlds oldest pc joke but just out of curiosity i wonder how well this thing can play Crysis 1 maxed out at 1080p....that game has dominated systems for years and i would love to know how hard this rig here dominates the game.
