The options are 9.11, 9.12, beta, and other. I selected Other when I filled out a bug report last week for the 10.1s. I put the info into the description box on a later page.

I had this problem with my 5870 when I overclocked it, so I left it at stock clocks. Then I started getting it while playing Fallout 3 on it. I disabled HDMI audio and that was the end of that, no more grey stripe lockups.

But then I got Empire Total War and had problems again. This time it was caused by heat, I would watch the temps on the card, they would get to 72C or so and then it would start crashing and restarting. The game wouldn't end but the screen would freeze for about 10 seconds, go orange, and then come back. Most other games I've played on the 5870 (GTA4, L4D2, Fallout 3, FSX, GRID) don't even get the card out of the 50C range. But ETW for some reason really stresses it, especially the strategic view.

The solution for that one was to go into ATI Overdrive and manually set the fan to 90%. That keeps temps down to about 65C and I can play for hours on end with no trouble. The fan is loud as hell though.

My 5870 is the Sapphire Vapor-X version. I never had one hiccup out of my old 4870, it performed flawlessly. Same goes for the 9800 Pro I had back in the day. So I'm a bit surprised at all the odd problems, though I have workarounds for them. It has me thinking about going to Fermi too, providing there aren't weird problems with that one as well.

Another reason I'm considering going to Fermi is that the graphics engine on FSX runs like crap on ATI cards, though the 5870 seems to do better than other ATI models. Supposedly FSX runs fine on the Nvidia cards, even old ones like the 8800.

Huh.. just found out 10.1 breaks the power-saver/turn monitor off. My screen just goes black with the mnitor still on. Lot of other people with same problem at the ATI forums.

I can live without the power saver, but this just adds one more fuck up to 10.1.

I agree

The 10.1 driver is causing a few issues that seem to be related to controls that shut off the monitor in the power management and/or screen saver features of Win 7-64. If I set the monitor to go off automatically in a specific amount of time it sometimes doesn't come back on at all. Sometimes the screen is dark but other times I get 1/4" wide light green or light gray vertical bars. My only choice is to hit the off button and I don't like doing that too much either. I turned the power saver feature for the monitor off (to Never) and all seems ok for now.

Yay!! Just installed my brand-new XFX HD 5770 and it took about 10 min. for first GSOD. Thought I may get lucky and be spared. Yes I did a full-driver clean-out and the rest, I've been at this for quite a while.

Lowered my mem clocks from 1150 to 1100 which I saw suggested in several threads and gamed uninterrupted for 45 min. Haven't had a chance to really burn in the card yet to know if it really worked. I've read the locking the clocks Core & Mem might be the way to go. Although I've read a lot of different things in the bazillion threads on this subject.

Previous card was a GTX 285, so enough power is not the issue. What the driver is doing with it another question.

And to answer the question before its asked why I downgraded, several reasons. I work my butt off with the new job and don't have much time for gaming and my son has been bitten by the Wii bug and hardly uses the PC for gaming anymore. Used the money for a pair of 1TB drives and got the HD 5770 which is plenty of card for what we do with it.

Hopefully all this gets sorted out with the next driver release ....

Just got the 2D crash again. It shows up in Event Viewer as a "Warning", Event ID 4101. 'Display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered', which is a lie because I had to force a restart since the screen kept going black. *Sigh*.

Since we already know 10.1 and the hotfix doesn't fix/work we'll just have to wait for 10.2

Best place to see info on this is here

More specifically, this seems to be the thread of all threads:
http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=260&threadid=124747&enterthread=y
"Topic Title: ATi "grey screen crash"/coloured stripes [TOPIC] "

At 1297 replies currently, it's maybe a bit too much though.

I've goofed around the the overclocking settings, the power management settings, and the profile .xml settings and I'm still seeing it. I've still never had a "crash" but the screen corrupts occassionally which requires a reboot to recover from. Sometimes it's just the mouse cursor though which isn't that bad. I get it in games (Warhammer esp.) but not in high end games - I've played Bioshock 2 and GTA4 for hours and never seen it.
