Got an Asus HD5850 in November. Non of these issues with both 9.11/9.12 catalyst. The card has been running stock, I have not enabled ATI overdrive either ...

System is:
Core2 Duo E6750 @ 3.2
4x1 GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 (800)
Win 7 64bit
Asus P5K Deluxe
Seasonic MI500w PSU

I started having this problem after OCing my CPU this weekend. It happened several times but has not happened since I removed the OC on my CPU. I figured it was just the OC on my CPU making my system crash, but I was getting the same exact crash you guys are describing and I haven't OCed my 5870 at all.

i only get grey screens w/ my 5770 Vapor-X when overclocking it too much. Otherwise it works fine with no probs. therefore maybe its a heating issue on some 5xxx cards?

I too have very rarely had this grey screen problem, but strangely enough only in Media Player Classic in DXVA, switching between fullscreen and windowed mode.

lol damn that sucks. I'm not getting any screen corruptions so I don't need to get this update. Just sucks that it came out when you have no card.

D: :D I know but I am content. I just wish it wasn't my b-day cause I am getting the urge to buy myself a nice *cough 5870* i mean b-day present

EDIT: o yeah, I''ve already looked at the 369$ XFX 5870 deal at MicroCenter = sold out; dang! - excuse me, $367.99

After reading through this thread, it seems to me that most of these cards are clocked to the bleeding edge of stability from the factory, and some vendors who are selling them OC'd are having stability problems. It doesn't seem like something a driver update would fix, but i could be very wrong.

People as well as I have reported grey hangs while in 2D desktop mode (157Mhz gpu core & 300Mhz mem)

No problems here. 9.12 hotfix. If you're running more than 1 monitor, I would force the clocks to higher.

Sorry to hear that. Least you didn't RMA yours before a hot fix was available like I did with mine, heh.

Let us know how it goes.

In about 4 days, my 5770 has hung twice in 2D. According to the tomshardware article, this is one of the big problems. The first time, Windows managed to recover, but the entire desktop was sluggish as hell afterwards; I didn't put 2 and 2 together until a few hours later. Just now, the second time, my screen kept going black, and I had to hard reset after a few minutes without recovery or being able to restart it.

I haven't had any 3D crashes yet, but I haven't been playing much. My old 7600gt never crashed once in about a month, so yay...

My 5870 works fine in everything but trying to overclock it even the smallest amount in ATI Overdrive I get the weird vertical lines so I guess it's staying at stock. This is after installing the Hotfix.

My XFX 5850 has tiny grey stripes all over the screen when playing any avi/xvid format, but strangely it doesn't show up when playing high resulution files like .mkv. Gaming is great, never had any issue.still on 9.12 driver.

No issues with my Asus 5870 so far. I will be running an overclock test sometime later as well.

My XFX 5870 XXX had done it a few times in two months, mostly at 900MHz core. No issues at 890 or below. Temps were always fine, and wasn't a heavy OC. I wondered for a brief second if it was a common problem, but only for a second. Good luck OP

Now we need to see what was changed in the hotfix. Sort of a clue as to why this is/was/still is happening. I saw no explaination of the cause on AMD's site. Did they need to reduce/increase voltage to some component? Was there a power management issue?
Things like that. Good to see this issue was big enough to get some attention.
