Actually I'm not sure if they could do anything if that was a wireless router in someone's house, the story says it is a router in a community center which I assume is owned by some government entity. Free speech = free speech on your router, not someone else's.

That is retarded. They are going to waste all that time and resources "investigating" the problem. It's a rec center. They probably hooked up a linksys router and left it with the defualt ssid and admin password. Next thing you know someone logs in and changes it. I mean seriously, they don't honestly think it was someone who works there who decided to name it that knowing how many people would notice it do they?

The hateful signal I.D. popped up on the iPhone of a 28-year-old mom inside a Teaneck, N.J. recreation center, where her 3-year-old daughter was attending dance class.

The offending signal was coming from a router connected in the Richard Rodda Community Center in the the township, located 10 miles outside New York City.

I doubt there are any FCC laws governing wifi ssid but there are laws where you can lose your operators license for usage of hate speak or profanity on public unlicensed spectrum. I wonder if someone is trying to bend that law to include wifi ssid since it is publicly broadcast.

In today's world where its common to see wireless access points advertised, I would think that just like any type of radio broadcast, some kind of rules should apply to what you advertise. If its illegal to connect to someone's wifi without their permission, even if its open, I can't see how having inappropiate broadcast network names should be acceptable either.

The difference here would be one you choose to hear , the other is being broadcast to you. I could set up a radio transmitter on the unlicensed 50Mhz band and if I started hate crime would be in violation.
