Hate crime laws themselves are racist. They don't treat everyone with equality.

lol wtf? jail time for naming your WIFI something frowned upon?

Actually I'm not sure if they could do anything if that was a wireless router in someone's house, the story says it is a router in a community center which I assume is owned by some government entity. Free speech = free speech on your router, not someone else's.

Even though it's "not a big deal" it's empowering racists. I know most of you bigots love nothing more than to hear about these articles so you can use it as an excuse to do the very thing people are complaining about.
Is this handle the same one you use in BF3?

This idea, it is good. Using MAC filtering be a pain for some people, but I only have two wifi devices that use my network regularly.

I have an extra wifi router just sitting around. I think I might turn it on, not connect it to anything and leave it open with a witty name

That is retarded. They are going to waste all that time and resources "investigating" the problem. It's a rec center. They probably hooked up a linksys router and left it with the defualt ssid and admin password. Next thing you know someone logs in and changes it. I mean seriously, they don't honestly think it was someone who works there who decided to name it that knowing how many people would notice it do they?

This. Just have someone reset the router, change the log in information and move on with life

Thank you. Wow, just wow... It took for pages of self righteous inflamatory stupidity until just one person had the interest and integrity to post the context of this story:

A bigot named their WiFi signal “F--- All Jews and N----” — and now cops are investigating.

The hateful signal I.D. popped up on the iPhone of a 28-year-old mom inside a Teaneck, N.J. recreation center, where her 3-year-old daughter was attending dance class.

The offending signal was coming from a router connected in the Richard Rodda Community Center in the the township, located 10 miles outside New York City.

Township Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin called news of the rec center incident "deeply disturbing."

He noted recent attacks in Bergen County against the Jewish community.

And yet some people here seem to think that racism is no longer an issue...

I could see this violating some FCC regulation since it involves a broadcast on a public radio band - in certain cases those violations are criminal I believe. I don't know about a hate crime.

I doubt there are any FCC laws governing wifi ssid but there are laws where you can lose your operators license for usage of hate speak or profanity on public unlicensed spectrum. I wonder if someone is trying to bend that law to include wifi ssid since it is publicly broadcast.

This is really stupid. By the same logic if your ssid was named "Apple", would you be voilating a copyright law?

What my license plate read "Bombs4U' , would you be considered a terrorist?

What if i had a bumper sticker that read "Keep honking, i'm reloading", would the cops consider you armed and dangerous ?

One would think the cops would have better things to do. Obviously not.

In today's world where its common to see wireless access points advertised, I would think that just like any type of radio broadcast, some kind of rules should apply to what you advertise. If its illegal to connect to someone's wifi without their permission, even if its open, I can't see how having inappropiate broadcast network names should be acceptable either.

First and foremost, I am against racism. However, how is this different than the KKK having parades and such? The government actually gives them protection to do such things. How is this different than the government giving protection to those assholes at the Westboro church, so they can make a scene at soldiers funerals?

Whoever set this up will not see jail time, however, they probably will be fired. And that is the right outcome, not jail.

There is a huge skin head population in New Jersey, especially near Atlantic City. So this really doesn't surprise me.

Not sure if serious. You do know that this occurred in a city(government) facility and city(government) equipment, right?

The difference here would be one you choose to hear , the other is being broadcast to you. I could set up a radio transmitter on the unlicensed 50Mhz band and if I started hate crime would be in violation.

You guys broadcast your ssids?
Makes it easy for techno-illiterate houseguests, their phones, ipads, laptops, X-Boxes, etc. Just because they're not IT people doesn't make them bad drinking buddies.

Otherwise you end up configuring each device manually. o_O
