"It's horrifying to me that a person could hate a group of people so much that they give that name to their router....."

How does she know the person hates ANYONE?
Some people just have a sense of humor, twisted as it may be.

Even though it's "not a big deal" it's empowering racists. I know most of you bigots love nothing more than to hear about these articles so you can use it as an excuse to do the very thing people are complaining about.

I guess I am a bigot because I find this story disturbing. Or maybe it is the fact that I don't think the government should function as a nanny telling us to "play nice". I would almost certainly guarantee that incarcerating the person who put in the offending SSID would return to society even more hate-filled and bigoted.

The thing "all us bigots" realize is a somewhat self-regulating society is possible. Putting every person in jail which has prejudices (everyone does) seen as extreme in their society is not the solution.

Besides, isn't living in New Jersey only a few shades from being in prison anyways?

Not much different than placing a racist sign on your front lawn, even worse that this occurred in a public facility.

People need to get the stick out of their collective ass.
Ok, there was a problem. The problem was located and fixed.
So now lets expend a ton a public resources to investigate and prosecute a prank where there is real crime to be fought.

I think it's more sad that someone thought that naming their wifi network that would actually be funny. Jail time and police action in general is overboard but that keyboard gangster needs to be roughed up a bit.

I like how they point out the race of the people in the story over and over. Stupid and tasteless yes. Hate crime, that seems a bit cavalier?

I think I should change mine. Maybe to the classic WECANHEARYOUHAVINGSEX. Should scare the neighbours a bit. 🙂

I suppose the woman who complained would like to see a government bureaucracy set up that must approve of SSID names before you can activate your wireless router. Think of the children!

You guys broadcast your ssids?

It doesn't really matter these days, a lot of modified clients reveal hidden ssids now, and I think even some manufacture specific software does too (IIRC one of Dell's wireless management bloatware tools will reveal hidden SSID's)

Mine was left unsecured (only allowed some mac addresses) and named FREE INTERNET.

I wonder how many people tried to connect to it over and over.

This idea, it is good. Using MAC filtering be a pain for some people, but I only have two wifi devices that use my network regularly.

Now what if the guy who names it that is a member of the race being slurred? Still hate crime? This is fucking stupid.
