I don't know a lot about rap, except I liked the soundtrack to the movie Do the Right Thing..

But I'm interested in the relationship between rap's message, and the call in this thread for politeness and respect for others.

Is there a relationship ? Most of my personal exposure to rap is from hearing it coming from someone else's car, but I suppose there are popular rappers who promote politeness and respect for others ?

RIP Biggie.

Most rappers suck. Most rappers simply spit out pointless metaphors and have incredibly plain voices that sound the same all the time. Even the ones that rap fans say are good, suck. Most of BIGs rhymes weren't complicated but I don't know how people can't see his flow and how much talent it takes to actually make a good rap song. Most rap songs today rely heavily on the beat, and just throw some garbage rapper on (Like 50 cent). Big is one of those rappers who sound great, even with a minimalist beat.

He was a genious lyrically. For anyone that says otherwise, I challenge you to make a 30 second rap song (actually record it on your computer) that sounds good. I doubt you could do it because 99% of rappers out there can't.

Listening right now to "Machine Gun Funk"

Other rappers I like: Jurassic 5, Del the Funky Homosapien, Eminem, Nas probably some others. I don't even like most of Tupacs songs, I just find them boring.

get the fvck out of here ...

country music is hated by those types of people just as much as you hate rap, probably more.

maybe it's just that all of the people you hang out with or are around all dislike rap and all can agree on that, and maybe thats why there is such hatred towards it with the people you hang around? just maybe ...

You've still missed the point! Why hasn't country music drawn anywhere near the backlash that rap draws? Because my FRIENDS AND I don't like rap? Please. I wish I had that kind of influence but I don't. I am not responsible for millions and millions of Americans hating rap to the point where they have to be so outspoken about it. Don't try and turn this on me. You happen to like a music style that is widely HATED and agressively so. I don't care how much you like rap; much of the country vigorously does not. Sure people hate country music. Sure people hate metal. But when do they get as worked up as they do over rap? I'm telling you... this is the plainest possible evidence there is for the case that rap... well, sucks. The population complains against rap more aggressively than they complain about any other type of music. You see evidence of this in the forums here. You see it in the news. You see it in magazines. Yet you seem to maintain that ALL OF US are wrong and you and your rap guys are right. If that makes you sleep better at night...

As to your first sentence, I have no f-ing clue what you tried to say there. Something about bad context and grammar. But it sounds like you took my statement to mean that no one bashes country music. That's a misinterpretation, and a gross one at that. Of course people bash it. Just nowhere NEAR as loudly and frequently as people bash rap. Which is my whole point! Country music must not be as bad as rap, if people can't complain as loudly about it.

My moral fiber is irrelevant. My "research" on it is irrelevant. DO you not watch the news? How often does some rapper manage to get arrested for drugs? How often does some rapper kill another rapper, or someone else? How often does some rapper get nailed for beating his wife? How often to rappers rap about committing crimes, doing drugs, killing cops, killing other people, or something similar? Do my moral views really need to be known before we can identify these behaviors as bad? Do you think rappers are saints? Don't get me wrong... I know there's plenty of excellent, morally responsible rappers out there. I know they aren't all like that. But there's a disproportionately high percentage of them that are, I wager.

DO you not watch the news?

I read the news I don't watch tv.

How often does some rapper manage to get arrested for drugs?
No more often than your favorite rockstar or actor

How often does some rapper kill another rapper, or someone else?

C-Murder and Shyne are the only rappers I know of that have been in the news for killing someone please provide more evidence otherwise. EDIT: Shyne was convicted of a shooting not murder. So that only leaves one rapper that I can recall that is serving time for killing someone. Cassidy was also charged with involuntary manslaughter

How often does some rapper get nailed for beating his wife?

I can't recall a single story in the past 5 years with this headline.

How often to rappers rap about committing crimes, doing drugs, killing cops, killing other people, or something similar?

Most adults can seperate fact from fiction and understand that rap like all other genres is simply entertainment. Many other groups (non-rap) sing about illegal activities as well.

Do my moral views really need to be known before we can identify these behaviors as bad?

I think So since your ramblings indicate a complete lack of understanding of the topic. You need to qualify your statements somehow.

Do you think rappers are saints?

No I think they are entertainers. Just like Rockstars. Do they have problems and use poor judgement.....of course we(humans) all do.

where do you live tha tyou have the perception that rap is so widely hated? Last I checked hip hop was extremely poplular and has no indication of changing any time soon.

if you really do live in alaska then that clearly explains your ignorance on these matters and I will let that slide. Other than that you have to be a complete shut in to not understand the impact that hip hop has on todays culture.

So funny, people arguing over something subjective like music and art. B.I.G was remembered on every hiphop station from XM to Sirius to Philly to LA to Atlanta. To say his music won't be remembered as much as Elvis or M.Jackson is absurd. You'll realize it once your kids ask you if you remember Biggie. Rap is here to stay, the US population pyramid is shifting to youth, deal with it.

All that effort to basically say..."if you don't agree with what I perceive to be what the majority of America likes, then you are wrong".

I'll give you credit for trying though, even if you present one of the least convincing cases possible for declaring all Rap to be worthless.

It never fails to amaze and sadden me how stupid, rude and, yes, racist people here are, when logic should dictate that a tech board would attract a more intelligent & enlightened crowd.

apparantly, there's only one kind of rap with only one type of message. NO IFS ANDS OR BUTS.

giantpinkbunnyhead, I won't argue the point that there's no shortage of people out there who hate rap. But for you to say something as ridiculous as rap sucks because a lot of people don't like it is, well... ridiculous. The bandwagon argument is weak by any stretch of the imagination.

Why do rap threads always degrade into a flamefest?
Can't the people who don't like the music just stay the fvck out of the thread?
Do you really need to express your hatred that much?

I really don't dig on much hiphop, but there is some that I really love. It's all old stuff and I really don't pay attention to anything new because it's mostly bad.
I feel no need to come in here and start going on and on about how much rap/hiphop and the artists suck and are worthless. The only people who are worthless are the sniveling little sh!t heads that post the hater crap.

If you don't like it, then don't listen to it.

SampSon, if you read this thread, you would understand that whenever there's a thread with music that people don't like, it gets crapped on.

Or something like that.

Funny how when other genres of music have threads about them, people who dislike that genre typically stay out and don't comment.

Then in every single rap thread that comes up on ATOT (yes, every single one), the people who like those other genres always come in and have to bash rap.

Shows a lot about the people who like those other genres.

Biggie = my favorite rapper of all time. R.I.P.

Check out the painting of him I have in this picture here.

For goodness sakes, dust your room; especially above your desk/monitor.
