Funny how when other genres of music have threads about them, people who dislike that genre typically stay out and don't comment.

Then in every single rap thread that comes up on ATOT (yes, every single one), the people who like those other genres always come in and have to bash rap.

Shows a lot about the people who like those other genres.

Biggie = my favorite rapper of all time. R.I.P.

Check out the painting of him I have in this picture here.

So, rap music really speaks to you huh? You can relate to the inner city struggle of the black man?

Nothing more lame than some white dude or an asian dude listening to rap music. You're really gangsta yo.

so someone in the city cannot find something in a country song to relate to because they are not white and don't live in the country......get out of here with that crap.

i know he's reffering to biggie here...but there are other kinds of rap besides gangsta rap, even emo rap...see sage francis.

If rap threads get bashed by every other music group, then maybe it's not the rest of the music groups that have the problem.

its a people not a music problem.

OK, let's make it: If rap is the only music so openly bashed by people, then maybe it's not the rest of us who have the problem.

Rap is bashed the most because people hate it the most.

why cant it be that rap haters happen to just be more obnoxious.

You're missing the point. No other music generates the hatred towards itself as much as rap does. It's not that EVERYONE ELSE is the problem. If country was as bad as rap, then people would be bashing country music as bad as they bash rap. If xxx music was as bad as rap, then people would be bashing xxx music as bad as they bash rap. You can replace any musical genre you like and in the end, rap seems to be the only genre that just flat-out isn't liked by so many, so blatantly. I'm saying... the odds that the entire rest of the music world have the problem while the subcommunity that is rap fans does not... it so ridiculously improbable that it makes my head hurt. Especially given the high moral fiber of all these remarkable "artists".

That's a pretty ignorant statement considering most popular music came from blacks.

And I'm no rap hater.

ok now please give us the top 5 of musical ability.

Asking for the top 5 rappers in terms of musical ability is like asking who has the best smelling fecal output.

LOL.. That just earned a spot in my sig... that is priceless!

hmm...i dint think it was that funny or creative...

wow i don't even know where to begin with that ignorant statement ...

please show me where i said i can relate to the inner city struggle, please let me know.

i guess by your train of thoughts, i can also relate to "beeps" and "booms" and "bumps" and "thumps" since I also listen to trance and house music.

you are an ignorant fvcktard to make that blanket statement. i like rap music (and all other music that I enjoy) because of the way it SOUNDS. that includes the beats, the voice of the person speaking, the melody, and also the lyrics. i also enjoy many MANY songs that have 0 lyrics.

i also didn't realize you have to be a certain race to like certain music, my bad.

wow ... i can't believe how ignorant people can be.

i swear this thread has the most ignorance i've ever seen in any thread I think ...

so are you guys telling me that if you go to the inner city in South East DC, that those guys there who are these thugs and praise these rappers will not be bashing country music?

get the fvck out of here ...

country music is hated by those types of people just as much as you hate rap, probably more.

maybe it's just that all of the people you hang out with or are around all dislike rap and all can agree on that, and maybe thats why there is such hatred towards it with the people you hang around? just maybe ...

Face it man Hip Hop culture isnt going anywhere because it is EXTREMELY POPULAR. You sound like my moms parents when Rock n' Roll hit. "Rock n' Roll is the worst music thats why we always bitch about it" blah blah blah.

and before you start discussing moral fiber of the artists we'll need to hear about your moral fiber and the research you've done on all of theirs in order to take you seriuosly.

Please. People said the same thing when Rock and Roll became popular. Is death metal any better? Music has always pushed the envelope of acceptance. That's what makes it powerful.

The fact is that people don't hate rap as much as you would like to believe. Just look at Americas top 40 when you get a minute.

If you say RIP to Biggie, why dont you say RIP to every other person that died this day, the next day, etc.

As for some rappers that are >> Biggie :

Nas
Rakim
Canibus
Common
GZA
Kool G Rap
Killah Priest
Ras Kass
Pharoahe Monche
Masta Ace
Black Thought
Mos Def
Talib Kweli

putting the biggest words in your rhymes doesnt = being the best rapper.

case in point.....canibus....incredibly talented lyrically but his flow...is a no go.

I know that putting huge ass words in your rhymes doesnt make you the better rapper (Nas > Canibus), but the way he just thinks, the way he puts together the rhymes, very very few can rhyme like that. I think as long as the words make sense, then its alright. There are lines where he doesn't use big lines, and those still outshine most artists.

"I'm sharper than scissor tips, sharper than rings on RZA's fist, its ridiculous"
"A hundred times nicer than the best there is Twice as african as krs is, who wanna test this"

Who else can think of lines like this?

"Getting in my way is like jumping in front of a car / breaking the sound barrier ? that means the car's in front of the horn / by the time you hear it blowing, it's too late to respond / by the time you feel it hit you, I'm gone"

"Try to visualize what Harry Houdini was feeling / handcuffed underwater without breathing / near death on a fatal quest for air / but why should anybody care? He put himself there / his career was based on facing his fears / to take destiny from the hand of the man upstairs / he didn't mind the cold stares he got from his peers / they couldn't tell him where he was going or how to get there / it's better to be prepared and fail than to be scared / and unsure of yourself and still get killed". "

"I?m above average with verbal semantics/ the Aurora Borealis in the form of a rap ballad/ they look at me like, ?poor bastard,/ why can?t you manipulate Billboard with all your metaphor magic"

The thing about lyricists is, you have to look deep into their lyrics and analyze their lines, and each time you listen to one of their songs, you will understand something you didnt know, maybe because you didnt know what a specific word meant, or that you just couldn't see "behind" the line. This is why I like lyricists as opposed to "non-lyricists".

:pvery nice
 for you my friend.

100 bars is also an awesome song...and i definetly agree with you that lyricists leave you thinking for a while and they have just much more depth, but biggie was a story teller and a damn good one at that...thats why he's much more mainstream. I'm not comparing the two, but they're both really good at what they do.

I find the double standard interesting.

Are you comparing "Biggie" to Bob Dylan?

How about this, someone makes a thread about how sad it is that this is the anniversay of when Billy Ray Cyrus lost his mullet. I'd be one of the first to jump in and decry that thread as well.

Happy?

I'm not comparing Christopher Wallace to Bob Dylan in terms of musicianship, because most of the people in this thread are too close-minded to even acknowledge the possibility that people could respect and love CWallace the way that other people and love BDylan or the Beatles.

I merely made the observation that, all things being equal, the thread about Bob Dylan would not be treated the same way as this thread is being treated. It would be left to those who appreciate his music, and they would be allowed to discuss it. This is rap, so obviously there's a double-standard in effect here.

What's really interesting is that you're comparing the death of Notorious BIG to Billy Ray Cyrus losing his mullet. I don't give a fvck who you are or what you're talking about, that's incredibly disrespectful. And I'm not even talking about on a musical level; I'm talking about a basic human decency level.

But then again, we're talking about rappers. Maybe you think that a rapper dying and Cyrus losing his mullet are about as important, for all intents and purposes.

I think Biggie being in the top 5 is pretty much an accepted fact by most who enjoy rap.

For Hip Hop newbs, yes.

But when you really dig deep down, you will discover there are tons of rappers better than Biggie. See my list above.

I dont look at it as a ranking, but i would say that biggie is one of the best ones. His style and flow are top-notch and his story telling ability is second only to nas.

Slick Rick fathered the art of storytelling, just like Rakim fathered the art of lyricism.
However, you cannot forget GZA, ex. "Animal Planet", very dope storytelling and best metaphors.

I can think of quite a few better reasons to remember March 9th than the murder of a pop/hip-hop artist.

Fortunately, Wiki does it so I don't have to:

9 March

and oddly enough, BIG isnt on there.

I agree. Lyricists certainly have there place in hip hop and I have many lyricists on my play list but sometimes I don't want to hear about the metaphyiscs of the universe I want to hear a fluid flow thats genius in its simplicity and biggie could do that every time.

A repetitive loop
All I need to destroy a soloist or group
Huh, I put it to ya boy
Hope you got the scoop
Biggie Smalls, the rap genius
I keep the glock by the penis, the cleanest cut
Fvck the sluts with the big humongous butts
Huh, I use a rubber, but
My style is gushy like the hooker's pu$$y
And it don't take a lot of back talk to push me
Into flamin' 'em like that little n**ga Damien
glock 19 to my motherfuckin' cranium
Game tight, gun totin' motherfvcker
Niggaz in the grave thought Biggie was a sucker
I tricked 'em- I gave 'em work then I sticked 'em
I stripped 'em, cause niggaz don't want the friction
Told you before how I brings the dra-ma
Slam Larry Johnson and his Grandma-ma

I can think of quite a few better reasons to remember March 9th than the murder of a pop/hip-hop artist.

Fortunately, Wiki does it so I don't have to:

9 March

and oddly enough, BIG isnt on there.

yes he is scroll down to where it says death
