When power goes out so do water pumps, so your taps' source won't replenish. Storing a substantial amount of water is difficult.

I'm very lucky when it comes to water. I'm on a well, but the water is near the surface. I had to remove and replace the pump and was surprised to see that the water is only about 20' from the surface (the well goes much deeper, the pump is at 60'). I can just lower a decent size container down and pull up what I need, or drop a hose with a hand pump.

Edit: Just read Darwin333's post. I'm now hoping I can get sex in exchange for all my readily available drinking water!

If you are 20 and look like a super model I will oblige you.... and you can keep the water.

I have actually been through various crisis situations such as being described. Only once did I actually "need" a weapon and that was during Katrina. Even then I didn't need some fancy ass AR (Rather ironic, I did have one but it was one of my guns that never came out), a shotgun slung over your shoulder so that your were visibly armed was by far the best "defense".

In every other situation I never needed a gun, albeit I had one, but I did need my food and water. Knowing that I would say that food/water is definitely a priority before a gun and when you do get around to defense a simple and cheap pump action 12 gauge is absolutely perfect.

With all of that said, neither food nor guns/ammo are the most valuable things to have in a crisis. Without a doubt the absolute most valuable thing to have during a crisis by far is fuel, usually in the form of regular old gasoline. I have gotten guns, food, water, offered sex from someones wife, gold, untold amounts of cash, you name it for relatively small amounts of gas. People buy their nice fancy generator for their house and then they buy one or two 5 gal. cans of gas for it. They don't fill up their vehicles or waste half the gas in it looking for other supplies they didn't stock up on and until power comes back on you can't purchase gas with any amount of money. After refusing $10 a gallon a guy offered to let me bang his friggen wife for 5 gallons of gas!

I keep a few weeks worth of food (easy as hell), two weeks of water (a bit more space consuming) and of course ammo for all of my guns but I also keep well over 100 gallons of gas at all times. The gas is a bit more of a pain in the ass because you gotta keep rotating it into your vehicle but when/if you ever need it the trouble will be well worth it.
So it was YOU! My wife got pregnant over that gas, buddy, and you owe us
about $18k in child care fees. And no I don't take gas as payment.

How do you keep 100 gals of gas? What is your setup?

Let see, 5 gals of gas for a regular chick, 10 gals for a hot one, 1-2 gals for an ugly one. <making note, just in case>

Storing gas is some work. Last time an event happened near me gas is only a problem when power goes out, and as long as it is a storm you can anticipate that. The big problem was getting gas cans I noticed, they were impossible to buy, and generators crank through gas quite quickly. When shelves replenished I bought a 5 gallon but maybe need another. I don't have a generator but I have a neighbor who does and I am sure he would lend me juice if i kept his gennie going.

Soldiers are trained to obey their commanding officers. That's what they do, and in the case of the government breaking down they are trained to BE that government.

LOLWUT!?! No, we were not "trained to BE the government", what an idiot.

What makes you think you know anything about operating any piece of high-end military equipment, let alone a javelin? You played COD Modern Warfare 2 on Xbox? Adorable

The javelin is an $80,000 surface to surface missile that the vast majority of trained soldiers wouldn't know how to operate properly. You would be better off with a spoon!

Yet another LOLWUT!?!? The Javelin is hardly a complicated system, the CLU is pretty easy to figure out, and the class wasn't even twenty minutes with safety briefing. Here's a video of some soldiers playing around with the CLU in their barracks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYxcLyw8gPA intense piece of complicated equipment there lol. You're a riot of laughs.

There is no point in stocking up food for a crisis without a means of self-defense. Your neighbor with the weapons doesn't need to stock food, because he is taking yours.

Of which certain items have been drugged, so that when he passes out you can steal all his weapons, get your food back and leave with his wife and dog..

You are all fools. None of what you claim to be worried about will ever happen (i.e. the breakdown of society) but IF IT DID who do you think scoffs at you stockpiling small caliber firearms?

The people who would have the power in the aforementioned (quite impossible) situation are the Military.

If you really want to run around raping and pillaging a post apocalyptic wasteland, your best bet is to join the USMC, US army, or Air force. The rest of you are pissing on a forest fire.

I have a friend who works for a company that makes bulletproof vests and sells civilian versions of several different automatic weapons that can easily be converted and he doesn't even own a gun. We always joke about how stupid and insane his customers are (preppers). I wonder if you realize you're all marks, suckers.

In a societal breakdown what makes you think the military will side with whatever is left of the government and turn against the civilians? Or would the military protect those same civilians who happen to be their families and neighbors?

People already forget that this happened in New Orleans.

The military isn't allowed to enforce law on US soil, but Blackwater was patrolling the streets before a contract was even signed to do so.

Fortunately, or unfortunately in your case lol, Fema/.gov has always been rather quick with food and water. The one thing I have never in my life seen them handing out, partly because they have their own issues with supply, is gas. Hell they can't even get generators to a few dozen gas stations and ensure that those gas stations have an unending supply of gas much less distribute it themselves.

Yeah, I always thought that the man portable highly destructive weapons that we give 18-21 year olds to be used in the heat of battle and in rather close proximity to people who you don't want blown up were designed to be fairly idiot proof. Just an assumption...

Not me. Even on the Internet I'm old, short, fat and ugly. Hey, at least it keeps away stalkers and I don't have to explain strange women showing up to my wife.

Good point, although I remember the big Canadian ice storm where the Canadian government simply confiscated all private generators they could find. With our government, the NSA could make that search very simple indeed.

Newsflash asshole: Nobody is on your side, you prick.

AWWW is somebody upset?

Really though learn to type a cogent response. If all you have to offer is insults, you are of no interest to me and frankly are not even entertaining to argue with.

It's hilarious how when stupid people (like yourself) have no position to argue from, they resort to claiming three things: A) WAH TROLLING! B) Insults C) "I'm ignoring you because I'm sooo smart"

You don't have a side, you have a point. On top of your head. No one wants anywhere near your head. Or your desk, even though I'm sure the Barney stickers and colorful mobile would be quite comforting.

It's great that you took enough time off from screwing your sister to come down and write a response but next time, make a little bit of sense. I'm going to let this one slide because, well, look where you're from! You really never stood a chance.

Well...we actually design and build them. There's that...

And write the instructions so that even people as dumb as you can understand them...

Actually we don't really design those much, it was an existing project inherited from Texas Instruments/Martin...oh hey look another defense contractor that relys on a civilian workforce.

He acts like it's rocket science or something.

Oh wait, rocket science isn't actually hard unless you dropped out of highshool or if you got a business degree so you didn't have to take scary math or physics.

Just expensive. Precision seeker optics and seeker cooling systems that have long shelf life, perfect consistent solid rocket motors without propellant flaws, some image processing software, fast FPGAs, etc.

I guess it LOOKS hard if are TreVader and don't have an engineering degree...

The science behind modern weapons has been around since the 60s. Its only relatively recent advances in computer performance, size, battery life, and cost that make them so prevalent and practical.

Bottom line though is all the engineering knowledge and know how that produces and delivers everything the military uses... it all rests with a civilian workforce.

I respond intelligently to intelligent people. Sorry spanky, but you don't rate that high. You haven't made a single intelligent point in this entire thread.

You should write books! It's so cute that you think you produce that weapon, and that in turn somehow makes you capable of using it in combat!

Well, maybe not books. Maybe D-Movie scripts that aren't sold. But still! very cute and funny.

Let me break it down for you:

You do not produce that weapon.
You know nothing about it beyond what you see on TV and in games.
You are not a soldier in any military.
You are not capable of combat in any significant capacity
You would be the first to die in any kind of post-apocaplyptic insurgency against the US military.

But a man, or boy as I suspect, can dream right!

Keep dreaming

I respond intelligently to intelligent people.

Blatant fallacy here. You do not respond intelligently, at least as far as I can see, to anyone.

An intelligent person does not become stupid when they talk to stupid people. If you are so smart, and I am pretty sure you aren't, try showing even one example of a bunch of US citizens who have commandeered military property and successfully used it in any way to fight the US military. I'm not even asking for them to be under duress. Any organized group, and you'd have a point.

At first I thought you were ranting about something totally off topic, but it looks like you're trying to allude to you having an engineering degree? Bullsh*t, pardon my french. Pics or you're full of it.

Also, Science has been around for millennia, mr brilliant. "The science behind modern weapons" covers everything from Pythagorus to general relativity neither of which you likely know anything about. Saying that because the "science" was there in the 60s you can somehow design a thermonuclear weapon would sound ridiculous right? Or are are you an expert on Teller-Ullam design?

Really, I'm dying to hear you're brilliant musing on the functionality and operation of these modern weapons.
