I have a question, but I don't want to get into a lot of details at the moment. How much does it cost to get a restraining order? My mom may need to get one and we have no idea how much it is. :(

You should really give your Mom a break and not bother her so much, I cant believe she has to get a restraining order against you ;)

You would need to demonstrate the need in court. Depending on the location the requirements are different.

The Divorce Lawyer should provide the proper info.

Heather,

She can get an emergency restraining order, that lasrs from 10 days-two weeks at which time there will be a hearing where your Mom can request that it be extended, they usually last a year after they are issued.

Jean, she wants to know where you get that? At the court house or the police station?

If no "crime" has been committed forcing the need for a restraining order, I recommend going straight to the court house. However, if this is brought on by some type of crime, call the police and file a report and that should kick start the process.

Instead of posting another thread...I'll ask another question here.

Do any of you know of any agencies that will help find someone emergency housing? My mom and I need to move out of the house we're in and we have no money and no where to go. We don't need like an overnight shelter...we might be able to stay here until the first. The reason we're not staying here is that we can't afford the rent on our own. :(

Advice/suggestions are appreciated.

Call your local county's United Way and ask about Women's Shelter Inc.

Hzl, I'm going out of character here for a minute to be the voice of reason.

To everyone trying to give legal advice, please remember laws are different in every state. Hzl is in CA IIRC. Even though the information you give may be useful, it may not be applicable.

Consider talking to a state attorney's office or the district attorney. They may be able to assist you with a RO. Your tax dollars pay their salary. Remember that if they start stonewalling you. Their job is to represent the populace of the state.

As far as housing goes, I havent been down that road, but consider calling a state welfare agency. They might have useful information that can help you out.

Why do people marry and have sex with people that they want the police to keep at least 1000 feet away from them?

Didn't you see that episode of Seinfeld where George dates a convict?

Maybe because some people change after they get married, as in the case of my step-father. Or...his REAL self came out or something. :(

uncJIGGA - Atascadero is like 30 minutes away from here, so I'll tell my mom to give them a call or I'll call them. Thanks. :)

He's right. I don't think it's the time for legal advice. It's time to do what it takes to defend yourselves. The legal part comes later.

First, call the police. Beleive it or not, the correct number to call even for non-emergencies in some locations (for example, the city of Minneapolis) is 911. If that's not right, apologize to the dispacher and ask them for the right number. If they have a second, they should give it to you.

If you haven't already done so, look in the front several pages of your local white pages, the "real" white pages from the dominant local telco. in your area. There should be a list of dozens of community service numbers. Start calling those listed under Adult Protection, or the United Way's First Call For Help, if they are listed.

Good Luck. Keep your heads up. You've got friends who care.

Ahem...I hate to sound like an a-hole by bringing this up, but didn't your mother marry this man after only knowing him a week (I seem to recall a previous thread about this)?

They hadn't known each other for a long time, but it surely wasn't a week.

You can know someone for years, and still not know them until you live with them for a while. It's easy to hide what you are, when you aren't with others 24/7.

Good luck to you and your mom Heather, I know how hard it is when you see someone you love being scared/hurt by someone who claimed to love them. :(
