How about MegaTexture ? Any one have comments about this? I think it looks great on these mountains , it is a pretty amazing way of doing textures +1 for Carmack....

honestly, i think that's what makes ETQW so great graphically - not necessarily the best looking, certainly not crysis, but it's pretty damn flexible since it's D3 based.

I've gotta agree with that.. I was really looking forward to this game but I'm struggling to enjoy the demo. I gave up after 30 minutes and haven't gone back yet.

Maybe I'm being sucked in too much by the Tabula Rasa beta :-\

I agree, IDTech 5 engine will definitely have higher res textures streaming, in game...

I have been reading around and some 8800 users have been experiencing some choppiness in their FPS. I have had this myself.

Decent game. You just have to play around until you pick it up. There is notutorial which the game could have used.

You can pick up the basics playing againts the bots offline, rather than the clusterfuck games I played in last night. It was hopeless. I was the only one on our team who knew what to do, the other team had at least 4 so I was screwed. I tried telling people what to do but it was more fun for them to shoot a tree or kill each other :| I need to find a decent server ASAP.

No problems on my 8800 GTS 320, running at 1440x900. Everything is maxed out FTW! :)

I suppose "running like butter" depends on how high you need your framerate to be for good play. I'm running at 1680x1050 on medium with my 6800 GS. It plays fine most of the time, although when it's really hectic it can slow down a lot.

I also find it annoying you can't cycle the weapons using the just mouse wheel...but have to actually CLICK the weapon you want when you get to it in the list. This is counter to every other FPS ever made..and really becomes a hassle.

I agree with everything you said. The sounds are garbage.

The weapon switching is why it feels antequated and sluggish to me. I like the fast paced style of Unreal Tournament vs this.

Well, the weapon switching was the same way in Battlefield 2, and you don't see many complaining. Of course, a Patch might have changed it since 5 months ago. Thats why I trained myself to be able to quickly press the number buttons, without losing control of my character.

I complain about it and there are people who would prefer to switch faster on the fly. It's down to prefrence. I prefer a faster game.

Yeah, I updated Forceware drivers and killed McAfee Virusscan in order to get the choppiness down with my 8800GTS 640MB card.

Granted, I'm playing at 1920x1200 with everything enabled...

:)

Has anyone gotten around the 30fps cap? I tried the console commands for maxfps and removing cap etc but they don't function. Fraps still is stuck on 30. Sometimes when I'm inside a building it jumps to ~25fps for less than a second. I have been messing around in the demo trying to give it another chance. Still not my cup of tea, but I'm curious about the 30fps thing.

8800gtx and I'm getting really bad performance... sub 30fps @ 1920x1200

in UT2k4 I get great performance with everything turned up @ same res.

I even changed the profile.cfg file as suggested above with no improvement.

running xp pro, A64 X2 3800+ with 2GB ram.

help!

also, do you have to install punkbusta? I wonder why it has to run as a service all the time even when the game isn't running? what kind of info is being stolen and sent back to mothership?

Be aware that you're comparing a Direct3D (UT2004) game running with DX8, with a recent OpenGL game. Don't be surprised to get great performance in a 3-4 years-old DirectX 8.1 game with a GPU released in 2006 ... sometimes I get to wonder if gamers actually know when the games they are playing were created and what technology they use to render it on-screen.

It's comparable to saying something like: "Hey, I got a GTX and I don't understand why Half-Life 1 runs much better than Crysis, please help !" ...

I had no trouble running the beta at high settings, although I somewhat recall having problems initially. I'm not sure if I ended up lower a setting or two or just updating drivers... but the problem was solved and it ran smokin' fast at 1600x1200.

I'm downloading the demo as I type... :)

ya but others have been getting close to 60fps with my card so I'm just wondering why mine performs sub par...thanks for your wonderful suggestion, that really fixed my problem...

Punkbuster is an anti-cheater software. What it does is search for 3rd party programs running in the background while playing the game and will block those from functioning. Some servers require it to join. When it runs all the time it is just blocking programs that modify the memoryspace of the game.

Demo runs without a hitch at maximum in-game settings, all sliders at 100%, High everything or Ultra where available. 4xAA. 1600x1200. 45-60fps on the California map and it never got choppy. Most impressive. Nice graphics too, draw distance seems decent as well. Although I can't believe they put red dots over the enemies... Such silliness.
