Yes. It alters your body's biochemistry, hence it is a drug. And others mentioned, so are caffeine, nicotine etc.

Just to play devil's advocate, here, there are a few arguments for it not being a "drug".

Most notably, it is "food". The chemical that causes the effects are also metabolized for energy by your body. Pure alcohol has a calorie content. In excess (for suitably small values of "excess"), it causes problems with neural functions, yes, but so do most other chemicals. Glucose (your body's major source of energy) is carcinogenic in quantity (for suitably large values of "quantity"). Proteins (of which there are many), can be the most deadly poisons to humans.

Alcohol is unique (or at least in a very, very small group) in that it functions as food, poison, and drug, depending on your body's response, its concentration, and several other factors.

I think the only way to unilaterally declare alcohol a drug would be to define drug at a chemical level.

That said, I would not disagree with those who called it a "drug."

shrooms are obviously a "food" as well, so your logic, while sound, is flawed.

By the technical definition yes however when we talk about drugs we use the term to mean 2 different things most times. There are drugs we use as medicine and drugs that are used solely to alter conciousness or get a high of some kind. When you say someone is "doing drugs" it is likely that you are not saying they took a couple of tylenols for a headache or had a glass of wine with their supper. Many people consume alcohol in moderate amounts because they enjoy it as a beverage and in my opinion they are not using it as a drug. Others consume it to excess for the high or because they have become physically dependent on it and in that case it is most defintely a drug.

Yes. Doesn't stop me from drinking large amounts of it every now and again, though.

edit: on second thought, that's why I consume large amounts of it every now and again . . .
