Pumping gas yourself in Oregon

I'm from CA and I visited Oregon with some friends this past weekend. I went to put my credit card in the gas pump and then started to carry the gas pump over to fill up my car like normal... and then the attendant rushed over to my car and told me that you're not allowed to pump gas yourself in Oregon. He said that all gas stations in Oregon are forced to have their attendants pump gas for you... i was amazed and didn't know about this rule before. Anways, it was pretty cool because the guy cleaned my windshields for free... plus the gas is a lot cheaper than the bay area for FULL Service! W00t!

Anyways, now i'm back in CA

Technically it's not "Full service" as I think that entails checking your tire air pressure, oil, etc.

Technically, you can get in legal trouble by pumping your own gas. It's actually against the law to pump your own gas here in OR.

I live in NJ and I enjoyed watching gas pumpers suffering in the cold weather. :)

That I didn't know.

I haven't pumped my own gas in YEARS. Well, except the few times I've traveled out of state. ;)

Strange law HUH.

But it gives people jobs. (Low on the totem pole though they be)

Hey, not ALL fresh collage grads wanna flip burgers! :Q;)

The only scratch I had on my old car was from some inbred 16 year old gas jockey that couldn't aim with the nozzle. I never go to full serves unless I absolutely have to anymore because of that idiot.

A friend of mine was at the wedding of a friend of his in California, and stuck a note inside the gas-cap cover on the car the bride and groom were going to use to escape. He knew they were going through Oregon and would have to refuel there. The note said, "Help, I'm being kidnapped, call the police!"

Well, the guy who pumped their gas did, and the situation took hours to clear up, as they apparently left their identification, money, etc. in their other clothing, which was still at the church in California.

I refuse to live in a state that does not let you pump your own gas.

Reminds me of so many family vacations to Oregon... always struck me as strange but it's been that way for >10 years. Oregon's gas stations are classy affairs.

No doubt the result of a tragic gasoline-fight accident. :p

Yeah, I'll have to learn on my own, because I'm getting a '04 Nissan Xterra and return to RIT this fall as second-year student. Bah, it's a new lesson for me! :p

Wow.. a law like that is amazingly stupid. You can take it one of two ways: The "nanny-state" government that assumes you're not capable of such a simple task, or the gas-pumpers' lobby being amazingly successful at passing legislation to justify their existence.

Or maybe almost everyone in the state agrees that they shouldn't have to pump their own gas? It's been a law for quite some time and everyone knows about it. If we didn't like it, we would change it.
