I think one of the best way to break out of the middle class is to emulate the upper class. That is what I have tried to do and that is probably I am more conservative in my thinking than my liberal parents.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did anybody catch this? THis guy is a spineless moron. You think Bill Gates, Ted Turner, Ross Perot, and Steve Jobs got rich because they "emulated" the upper class. You know, you remind me of Niles on Fraser. I feel sorry for your friends because you're such a fake. Are you the type that also "emulates" the clothing of the upper class. BTW, I got a old wooden tennis racquet that you can have to bolster your suave upper class image. HAHAHAHA................... What an arrogant A-hole.

Sephiroth, you're thoughts are right on. It was kind of sad to see that mormon girl from Real World have such a sheltered life. She didn't know much about life outside of her mormon world. Also, you're right about the "supressing your kids only makes them want to do it" passage. I've had many of my friends and myself included not listen to what parents say to find out for ourselves.

Pidge, this nation might need a lower and middle class, but it doesn't mean we have to take away education, therefore not letting them have the opportunity to better themselves and actually have a chance to achieve the so called "high" class.

What is it with these attacks? "A-hole"? "spineless moron"? Did I ever attack anyone? Did I ever call anyone names? This is really uncalled for, especially since you don't know me. I did not imply what you are making me out to be. I simply mean, be responsible for your own actions, don't spend your time blaming others, seek the best education you can for yourself, be a leader etc.. I don't think my friends feel sorry for themselves for being my friend. I treat everyone with respect. I help them when they need a helping hand. I don't play tennis (especially with a wooden racquet). And I especially don't go around calling people profanities.

Vouchers are not compatible with such responsiblity. Taking from the public resource pool is not responsible. You have already said that you pay taxes, but even the single and senior citizens pay taxes... they probably pay for a large chunk of the $4000. You shouldn't have a right to use their money for your own agenda.

and ofcourse public schools need more money. They need to support extra programs and services for all children, even the handicapped. Something private schools can get away with not doing.

Zucchini,

it's everybody's money, certainly not governments or wholly senior citizens. If you feel all the money that's currently being wasted on creating more paperwork, more rules, higher administration costs, more bureaucrats, such wonderful programs as "social promotion" and "head start" is money well spent you are delusional.

All parents are asking for is better education for their children. It's becoming more and more clear the public school system cannot be revamped because politicians blatantly use education to achieve their own selfish ends. The Dept. of Education is irresponsible and the teacher's unions are the slaves of the democratic party.

In any event, the feds should get their damn noses out of things. Let states decide which programs and systems they want. See what works then other states have the chance to emulate it. If vouchers work, great let's spread the word. But the status quo isn't getting us anywhere.

I'm getting the message that public schools are a complete failure. Its amazing our country isn't in an economic recession due to our poorly educated population. Those public schools just don't work at all.. oh oops we're doing quite well... wtf is going on??

The feds should keep their noses out of things? hah, i'm sure thats what kansas wants. Creationism in schools, ban all teaching of evolutionary theory!

Yes politicians like George Bush push unecessary programs on schools for their own gain. Take a good look at their school testing program. The children are trained to take a test instead of being given a well rounded education. Teachers are given 4 foot stacked piles of test material and children do not "really" learn basic skills. What results from this are children that are great at underlining pronouns in sentences but incapable of understanding a full book. As i said before, what is required is school reform, not vouchers. The teachers would not block reform, but would rather be its stongest proponents. They also hate the test.

Zucchini,

If public schooling in general is doing as well as you claim, why is it that every time I watch the news or hear government statistics, our kids are doing far more poorly than in the 50's and 60's? And america compares poorly in several key areas against the student's of foreign nations.

You perhaps correctly pointed to Shrub's smoke-and-mirrors game regarding that test in Texas. I would also point out that Clinton has backed social promotion so high school students who, in my day, would be held back to repeat a grade or be prevented from graduating, are being allowed to ascend the educational scale. This has the effect of making Bill's programs look great but in the end students are getting the shaft.

Reform of public school (which I agree is great in many cases) is the way to go in theory. But there are too many deterents to successful reform due to federal political intervention.

I'm really not sure about those comparisons to the 50s and 60's. What was the highest math level most schools taught back in those days? I have no idea, but i'll assume that it was lower. We really need more information on these studies, because the media is certainly not going to report any good news.

and does it account for immigration? I don't think the schools are doing all they can, but i don't think they are as bad as some people are trying to portray. My sister and I went to a "ghetto" high school (independence high) and we turned out ok. I go to a state college, she goes to UC. Our friends have also done well, harvard/stanford/UC/USC.. it goes on
