The only fortunate thing is that there aren't any huge releases out or PS3 exclusives. Imagine if this happened during the holiday season or around the launch of GT5.

Also, Dr. Stafford, the guy who submitted the outdated server claims, even admits in his own statement that he doesn't know anything more than rumors:

"I have no information about what protections they had in place, although some
news reports indicate that Sony was running software that was badly out of date, and had been warned about that risk. "

http://republicans.energycommerce.house.gov/Media/file/Hearings/CTCP/050411/Spafford.pdf

Maybe people shouldn't just believe everything they read just because it props up their console preference.

Based on all of these "facts" presented over the last 2 weeks, one can only assume that Sony's security was handled by a single person, I think I've figured out who it is.

I think the timing was about as bad as it could've been. PSN went down less than 24 hours after the launch of a high profile game that is basically an online shooter (SOCOM 4), the launch of a game that was the beginning of a big cross-platform initiative that requires online to work (Portal 2), and a high-profile and well received fighting title that basically relies on online play for longevity (Mortal Kombat).

I guess we can blame the hackers since without hacking we wouldn't need security. But at the same time, don't leave your front door wide open and expect it to not be robbed.

Yeah man I'm just frustrated i guess like many others i just want all this done with and get my online gaming on

Yeah there's no "good time" for a massive gaming network to go down. During the holidays would have been worse, but any extended downtime due to a massive security breach isn't good. With that said it's good to see PSN coming back up and quite a bit improved. Although it is mildly amusing that they're only making feature changes and improvements after being forced to do so.

As for failing PS3's, well some are going to fail. It happens. It just happens about 1/3rd as much with PS3 as it does with Xbox. Of course it probably happens even less with Wiis...lol

I'm the same guy reporting every PS3 he ever encountered as failed: my launch Wii failed before I even got home form work to play it. It would not load discs or channels (black screen with error). Nintendo made a "rush" replacement that Thanksgiving and it had the common artifacting problem that I never noticed until SSBB was released in 2008 (long out of warranty). Also, the GCN memory cards would not work unless lifted. By that point, my nephew's 2006 Wii no longer read discs just as everyone else was discovering problems readin DL discs (SSBB was the first DL Wii game).

I'm sure this has been asked before... but why is the entirety of PSN down when what they really need to keep secure is CC info? Can't they let people play online as it's all free and shouldn't be tied to any CC database. I'm sure it's all interconnected though in some awfully stupid way given what we've seen of how Sony does things.

Not that I'm needing on or anything. I managed to link my Portal 2 game before it went down :awe: Just curious.

Because any given system is only as strong as it's weakest link.

More or less they have no clue when it's coming back.

Portal 2
Mortal Kombat
Socom 4

I would hardly say there aren't any huge releases.

As for the "OMG ALL MY CONSOLES R FAILING EXCEPT MY 360" crowd....sucks to be you.

Haven't heard a single person talk about any of those games in much anticipation. When I say huge, I'm talking GT5 level of release.

I read on IGN this morning that the official date for the PSN coming back fully is May 31st. I am starting to think this will be the first time we can play online. They missed the end of the week timeline to restore basic service. Maybe they decided to just wait until the entire thing is operational.

Socom 4 is pretty huge with any shooter fan. Socom is the father of online console shooters....

Portal 2 is being touted as Game of the Year and the PS3 copy included a free PC copy as well.

Mortal Kombat always has a loyal following, hell my wife made me get HER a copy.

While GT5 and Call of Poopy may do better sales numbers thanks to the unwashed masses and blind follower kids, the anticipation for these games are just as big. The difference is the quality of people anticipating these games and in my book quality always trumps quantity.

Holy shit I hope not.

It's beyond crazy how long it's taken already.

I signed up for Hulu Plus and can't even get the damn PS3 app until the store is back :(

Treyarch has said they're going to do it for PS3 players as soon as PSN is back up.

That's good, but will we also get a double xp weekend when the new map pack becomes available for the PS3?

Usually we get the double XP for xbox and then one for PS3 release.

Lol. I was just going to say the same thing. It's kind of surpassed being outrageous for me. Now it's just funny how clueless they are.

I know Sony is saying SOE only lost foreign CC numbers, but I've just had about a $1000 in fraudulent charges billed to my credit card in the last 24 hours. This is the first time I've ever had fraudulent charges to my account. I had several SOE subscriptions for years.

Proof that SOE USA lost CC#s as well...no. Suspicious...hell yes.

As an update, my stepbrother got hit Friday with the same type of charges. Based on a quick conversation, the only online vendors we have in common are Amazon, Newegg, and SOE.

Still not definitive, but...

The Portal deal really sucks. I assume #2 is still just a single player game but doesn't it require you to go online and authenticate (DRM) before you can actually play your single player game?

Because the PSN Account information was hacked too. It wasn't just the CC info. You don't want people signing in with their PSN user ID and password if you can't guarantee it is secure. Essentially, the whole freaking PS network was breached which allowed the hackers into SOE servers and other servers not directly related to PSN.

So since YOU haven't heard anyone talk about it, then they must not be big releases. Because game companies strive for YOUR approval.

No, single-player is fine. The problem is that PS3 owners can't connect to Steam to authenticate their PC version of the game.

Have already replaced my credit card, will buy a BR player and something to connect Netflix to my wifi. Goodbye PS3, don't game online anyway with it much if at all, especially now lol, I'll give that away to someone. All the offers they are offering to come back are dumb. Stupid Sony.
