So they're giving everyone a free month trial to their subscription service? That's laughable to me.

This exactly what I thought Sony should've have done, although I was assuming they wouldn't. It should effectively give everyone a free game, plus discounts on other games. Considering PSN is a free service that's not bad "compensation".

The problem is any PSN games that are free only for PS+ members will be rendered useless when the free month is over. Discounted games will still be fine, though.

Which means you have to give them your credit card to buy them. :D

Ah, well, that's no good then. Sony really should be giving away a half descent game permantly if they want this to have any real effect. I don't expect to be a third party tittle like the Square Enix games mentioned earlier, but one of their better in house downloadable games for example.

No matter what happens, you'll still need/want power and you can't defect to another provider.

Nice try, though.

Not at all, I simply don't have the expectation that Sony OWES me anything for being attacked by an outside entity. In addition, electricity is vital, gaming is not. I find the incessant crying about Sony owing us anything (except PERHAPS PS+ users). I don't intend to "defect" to another provider either, those that want to, certainly have the choice to do so.

Sorry, but nobody is saying Sony owes them anything, only that they better make it a good freebie if they want it to have any effect. The fact of the matter is that Sony has direct competition in this market. They'll try to give out a freebie or two to appease everyone. We're just saying it better be good. As you said, everybody has the choice to go elsewhere if they choose to. I'm sure Sony wants to keep that from happening.

Xbox 360 user here... but this has kinda got me paranoid. I've used my CC to purchase XBL subscriptions, but that card expired a little over a month ago and the CC# is now not is service. I think I'm going to stick to sub cards from bestbuy.

Just bizarre how this could happen to such a large tech/electronics company O.O

Why is that bizarre? Large companies have many more access points to secure. There is nothing that makes a company like RSA and Sony any more special besides their size.

The guy at Gamestop in the mall nearby said that he's seen a steady stream of people trading in their PS3's to buy Xbox360s, because of the PSN outage.

Sony didn't owe anyone anything when it was only a service downtime. Since that wasn't the case and actual data was taken, user data which Sony was expected to protect, they owe everyone who uses the service something.

Hasn't happened around here at all (A few friends are Gamestop employees).

Exactly. When you sign up for PSN, you're basically entering a contract with Sony. You have to abide by that fun EULA stuff, they're obliged to protect your sensitive data. It doesn't matter whether the service is free or not.

Think of it this way. You hand me your credit card to buy you lunch. I promise to keep it safe, then I loose it and don't bother to tell you right away. You'd be pretty upset. More so if that card fell into the wrong hands, and they racked up a huge bill before you could cancel it, because I waited too long to tell you. You could technically sue me for negligence.

It's what makes the month of free PS+ woefully inadequate. As the others said, the free games are only good for that month, unless you keep paying into it. What a perfect ploy to get people to sign up for the service! Or at least that's how it looks. Whoever is handling Sony's PR should be canned.

Well, it sucks but better safe than sorry. I cancelled my Amex Blue card I had tied to PSN and will be using prepurchased cards from here on out. Can we please go back to the days before DLC and downloadable games now?!

No, I just requested a new number, so the current number is being cancelled. I did not close the account, only cancelled my old card. Thankfully my PSN password was completely unique and the email I gave them was a trash email account that starts with sp4m****@isp.com.

The fact that Nintendo and XBox don't have ways to pay in dollars for purchases made me buy points cards for those systems. Seems to be a blessing in disguise as this type of hacking could happen to them too.

So now Sony Online Entertainment is down, perhaps their MMORPG services have been compromised as well?

http://maintenance.station.sony.com/

Dear Valued SOE Customers,
We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday).
We apologize for any inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience.
