SCEE VP says PS3 will cost 499 to 599 euros

In a radio interview with Générations Europe 1 yesterday, George Fornay -- president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe -- let a little something slip: the PlayStation 3 will cost between ?499 and ?599. That's somewhere between $613 to $736 in American dollars! He was sure to point out that while this might sound like a lot of money for a game system, it was in fact cheap for a Blu-ray compatible playback system. Yay?

Since I can't seem to get the radio stream to work (and don't understand French if I could) Update: The radio stream has started cooperating, though the French thing is still in the way. If you speak Français, you can jump to the 8-minute mark for the scoop. The news comes to us (via Google's translation services) from Play France. Now, this could be a language barrier problem, but the untranslated page still reads "entre 499 euros et 599 euros donc."

Sony already told us it was going to be expensive and we already know the parts ain't cheap, so either Mr. Fornay is trying to set up an unrealistic price expectation -- only to have it shattered when the PS3 price is revealed to be $7.50 -- or he broke the first (and second) rules of the Sony executive's PS3 club: don't talk about the PS3. This thing is going to cost that much just like the PSP was gonna cost $500.

Eh, I don't know but if it does I seriously doubt I'll be picking one up at launch.

that is damn expensive..........but if it has a blu-ray player it's kinda cheap for all of that. since they will be like over a thousand when starting out.

maybe thats what it costs to make it per playstation...i highly doubt they would try to sell it at that price if they want to compete with the 360

Estimates are the system is going to cost anywhere between 800-900 bucks to manufacture.

If they do indeed miss the season, it's going to be absolutely disastrous for the company. Plain and simple, it's a move they cannot afford to make.

Even if the system does have some bugs, I'm sure they'll release it. I mean look at the 360 Fiasco.

With their first revision of the product, the infamous red light on the power button. Whether it was overheating issues or what, Microsoft released a sizable amount of defective consoles.

One of the two I managed to get was defective from the launch date release. Worked fine for a few months, then come late January and the games wouldn't load, the ones that did hard-locked, and I finally got the infamous red light.

MS was REALLY good with their customer service and sending a replacement.

which is why you should have been more intelligent and waited a month to buy it. i will never understand why millions of people went bonkers and tried to get a 360 ASAP. holy sh!t people! it will be sold in the future as well! so people pay a premium, up to 1000 wasnt rare, and they could have waited 3 weeks and got it for half. friggin retarded....

Yep, paid MSRP for mine online, got lucky however as Wally world slipped up I believe. They at first canceled my order, but then changed it to be delivered and honored the order.

That is one hell of a lot of money for a game system, bloo ray player or not.
And if HD-DVD wins this new VHS/BetaMax war then it will be an insanely expensive game system only.
Am I reading this wrong or is Sony going to hinge a huge part of the PS3 success on Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD?
