PS3 sale forecast cut by 6 millions!!!! SONY CEO still think it's too cheap

Over a 1 million left on the shelves, unsold in Japan and USA.

TOKYO (MarketWatch) -- Sony Corp. (6758.TO) will reach only 75% of its global target for PlayStation 3 sales this fiscal year through March, according to a Nomura report released Monday.

Nomura cut its target for PS3 game units shipped during the period to 4.5 million from 6 million, citing poor sales over the holiday season in North America.

The Tokyo-based consumer electronics maker is fighting to keep its position at the top of the video game market against rivals Nintendo Co. (7974.TO) and Microsoft Corp. (MS). The company's rollout of its newest system has been beset by delays and supply shortages, but it has maintained it will sell 6 million units through March.

Sony said last week it had shipped 1 million consoles in the U.S. in 2006, but it sold only about 470,000 in Japan according to data released by computer game publisher Enterbrain Inc. This put it well below its global goal of 2 million for the year.

The unit is due to be released in Europe sometime in March.

In its report Monday, Nomura also cut its PS3 sales forecast for next fiscal year to 10 million from 16 million next fiscal year and to 11 million from 18 million for the following year.

IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon has told GamesIndustry.biz that Sony must produce more first-party software for PlayStation 3 or risk seeing more and more units left on shop shelves.

Pidgeon's comments follow the release of NPD's videogame sales data for 2006 which, according to SCEA boss Jack Tretton, show "the power of PlayStation".

The IDC analyst said he agreed with Tretton that the power of the brand "is confirmed with the PS2's performance in the market", adding that sales of hit titles such as Guitar Hero 2 meant that last year "PS2 was helpful to most third-party publishers' bottom lines".

However, he continued, "The PlayStation brand doesn't appear to be helping the PS3. If NPD's numbers are correct, there are over 300K PS3s on retail shelves. That is not good for a console launch of only a million and it's not good for publishers with PS3 software."

Pidgeon warned that Sony must focus on the games available for PlayStation 3 and the number of first-party titles in development, stating, "Software libraries are the key driver of console sales, and no console is going to sell on the promises - they've got to deliver.

"Sony needs more must-have first party titles to sell consoles. Gamers know Halo 3 is coming on the Xbox 360, and they can expect Mario on the Wii, but there are no established first party franchises coming to the PS3 except Gran Turismo - and that is delayed."

Pidgeon did say that first-party PS3 games Heavenly Sword and Motorstorm "look great", but observed, "They are new and less anticipated."

At 499, 599, I think it would be ridiculous. If you want true gaming, game on a PC. If you want to play fun games with 4 ppl, do it on a Wii. That's why I like the Gamecube. You don't play freaking mario kart or mario party or smash bros on a computer. Halo and stuff like that deserve to be played with a mouse and keyboard. If you're anywhere near serious about FPSes, you would be one of those hardcore CSers. But who on consoles are really hardcore anyways? You can still casually multiplayer in FPSes on your computer...

An analyst group cut the ps3 sale forecast, NOT Sony.

And you're going to trust SONY? Oh boy...

Well freakin' DUH. How do you sell a console without an available game library? Idiots.

What does trust in sony have anything to do with it. Its gonna be a while before Sony will admit they miss forecast figures. Public Statements that you aren't going to make numbers are not good. While analyst reports do some damage, its worst when it comes from the horse's mouth.

Sony will never admit their mistake. You have to remember they are Japanese.

Half Life Developer say the PS3 is an utter piece of crap to make games on:

Speaking recently to Game Informer, development studio Valve's, co-founder Gabe Newell discussed the next generation efforts from Sony and Nintendo. However, one machine came out with a large dent on its reputation.

The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a "do over". Just say, "This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it".

Wasn't the same thing said about the PS2 from some popular developers as well? But we all know how that went...

I think it's okay to not have that many great launch games because as history has shown, it usually takes a new system at least a year to really get started. But the PS3 also has a huge price tag so people are more inclined to just wait it out all together instead of buying now. Give it a year when all the big name games come out and I think the PS3 will do just fine.

It is bad-news all around for Sony. The PS3 might do well in a year or two from now, but that might be too late. A significant enough part of the PS3 plan is to push the blu-ray format - and that can't wait another year or two. If hd-dvd dominates before the PS3 catches on, that'll just compound the sales problems.

Except the PS2's only challenger was the Dreamcast, which didn't do much.
The Xbox 360 has already sold as many as the Dreamcast, and the PS3 hasn't even managed a worldwide release yet, and the Wii is also selling incredibly well.

Unlike the last generation, Sony don't have a headstart on their two main rivals, and the 360 is nothing to be sniffed at.

no shi|t - even me and my friends who are in favor OF the ps3 think its crap right no

give us games that don't suck sony 😛

the wii's advantage is 2 things only: zelda and wii sports

xbox is more meh - so as long as the titles get released on the PC it isn't an issue for us

sony will fail if it doesn't produce the games, and at a cost of 600 dollars --> why buy one is the games are not worth it?

Yay! The PS3 sucks! Let's all feel better about ourselves by bashing the evil $ony corporation's failure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm generally the kind of person who does not spend a lot on games - most of my games have been bought used for < $20. But even I own 5 games for my Wii. Rayman is incredibly fun. Trauma Center is very good. Anyone who thinks Zelda and Wii Sports are the only good games for the Wii doesn't know much about the Wii.

They just need to go crawling over to Square-Enix and beg them to do a remake of FFVII, with updated graphics. Suddenly lots of people would buy the PS3.

There are a few dynasty warrior-esque games coming of PS3, I am looking forward to those.
I think they should have released the console at the time where there are same must-have titles. RR7, Resistance, and a weak Gundam games were just very poor choices.
They need winning eleven, dynasty warrior, and GT then I am all over the ps3.
