"Today we're pleased to announce the global PS3 launch details. We will make PS3 available via a two-configuration plan. One with a 60GB HD. And the other with a 20GB hard drive. Japan's date: Nov. 11. In Japan 59,800 Yen. The 60GB PS3 will have an open price which retailers will set. In North America: 20GB for $499, 60GB for $599. Europe has 20GB for 499 Euro, 60GB for 599 Euro. 2 million to ship worldwide during the launch window. 4 million by end of calendar year 2006.

Engadget/Joystiq were doing a live blog at E3. Quote is near the bottom.

Controller details is also near the bottom. It looks EXACTLY the same as the PS2, except it has movement detection a la Wii remote.

update:
$500 version is "crippled." It lacks HDMI, Wifi and memory card reader.

$100 more (20GB version) than a xbox360..... xbox360 is to much for me, forget even more. Maybe in a few years *shrug*

The controller pictured isn't the ugly "boomerang" controller we have been seeing, and this a good thing. Looks like a PS2 controller, but in silver, is wireless (wireless is listed in the write up, in one picture it looks wired), and has motion detection.

I saw the confrence and Sony Playable Game don't look as good as the CGI movie and not better than 360 can offer

They also screwed over nintendo with adding Nintendo Wii sensior on the controller.

The 20GB model is the same price as a HD-DVD player, and you get:

- blu-ray player
- PS3
- PS1 + PS2 (they claimed "15,000" existing games would be playable)

Yeah. The system is expensive, but honestly, you do get a lot for the price.

Sony may be stealing ideas from Wii's remote and Xbox Live, but that's one of the advantages of being last to the table. You get to take everyone else's idea and try to make them better!

That's outrageously high. $500 for a console? Say I'm buying a system this Christmas. Explain to me why I would choose a system that:

1. Costs $100 more
2. Has less games
3. May be harder to find (as all newly released consoles are)

than an XBOX 360 that's readily available with an established library of titles. This sounds like a huge bust for Sony.

1. Bigger HD (I believe)
2. Game Preferences - I for one don't like most Xbox360 games, and the ones I do are available on computer (Oblivion, Call of Duty, etc.).
3. Many features the PS3 is seemings to promise (blu-ray, motion sensors, internet capabilities, etc.)
4. Because you feel like blowing lots of cash?

goddam that's a lot of money for a console.

Almost as much as people spend on their video cards:Q

not really...

xbox CPU >>>> cell in terms of programming ease

cell is 1 general core + 7 specific cores, whereas the xbox CPU is 3 general cores

20GB doesnt have hdmi, card reader, wifi (has bluetooth though).

60GB will be the one to get. 100 dollars for all of those features seems like a good deal to me...though the overall price is still damn expensive.

edit: ALL ps3 controllers do NOT have vibration, but they do have the tilt/movement thingy...

I wonder how cheap they will drop the 360 down to by then. Be an even bigger price gap between the two.

That's seriously a lot of money. And I already thought the x-box360 was pushing it. I think Sony has passed the reasonable mark here... especially with parents. Think of the parent who has to spend like $800 to get the ps3, an extra controller and a couple games.

the hdmi rant is pretty dumb IMO
why cant you afford $100 difference but you can afford a bigass screen plasma TV

but with the lack of so many features they should drop the $499 version to $300-$400

1: Considering you'd probably pay $100+ for a HD-DVD Addon for the X360 (extra box to find room for) it's well worth it.
2: 15,000 games playable at release compared to what 50? 100? 200? on the X360
3: The X360 hasn't exactly been awesomely available all over the world but as you said it happens to ALL new consoles. PS3 has the 2nd largest library of titles available (and that's before release) of any Console (2nd to Wii).

For the record the Wii controller can detect it's potion in 3D space. The PS3 controller can only detect "tilt" motion. Not quite the same, likely caused by all the patents Nintendo filed.

All that matters is implementation. I can't wait for Nintendo coverage.

thanks for pointing that out. I think this is a really big point and I've added it to the OP. The lack of HDMI may limit the $500 version's playback of HD material...

rather meaningless number. its like the fact that you can play even dos games from decades ago on a pc. but so what? you didn't buy a brand new expensive system to waste your time on that. its more a gimmic that actually useful.

as for tilt controller. welcome to 6 years ago http://www.joystickreview.com/microsoft/sidewinderfreestylepro.asp

its silly and awkward anyways. think stress positions/guantonamo bay😉

the crippled systemcan't be upgraded to premium level, and that just makes it a piece of garbage. the real price of this sh*t is 600 dollars for anyone serious. you are spending 500 dollars on a crippled system, you aren't saving money at all.

sony=riaa+mpaa! stay away!

atleast microsoft does'nt sue its customers.

hahah.. 17 million psp units sold and still they cant be damned to make propper firmwares or games on that thing
