PS3 is amazing

Just picked one up for $499 along with Resistance and Casino Royale. Also got in on the 5 free BD special. I must say I've never been this impressed with a videogame console in my life.

The entire setup has been absolutely seamless thus far. HDMI to my 1080P plasma worked on the 1st go, got my wireless network setup in under a minute, even got my WMP 11 streaming done in under a minute. The entire UI is smooth as butter, going in/out of games and movies is super quick.

So far Resistance is pretty fun. Great graphics and ultra-smooth. There are a lot of people hating on the PS3, but once some great games come out for it then this will be the system to beat. The only gripe I have so far is the fan noise. I wish they would just install quieter fans into these systems, I mean it can't cost that much more to have a quality fan in there?

Anyone looking to pickup a High-def player need look no further. The PS3 is the Blu-ray player to beat.

I think most of the hating is just hating on Sony in general.. and how they wanted to force bluray onto you. It's just the perception of how they did everything really.

Cause the system itself is pretty neat, granted, damn expensive. It'll be interesting in about a 1.5/2yrs to see if MS gets limited by not having a built HDDVD. My guess though, they may require it later on, but the drive will drop in price, making the overall cost still lower than the ps3.

But yeah, I left my brother's overnight to fold... I was thinking I could save on the gas bill in the winter when playing games :)

yeah its a great machine, and seemingly they're making it better with each firmware release.

i believe DVR functions are on the horizon, which is cool, add to that a user replacable HDD and it would seem a bit of an open platform allowing game mods on games like UT3.

i think its sony's ethics and methods that people hate.... but the actual hardware is pretty sweet.

ON the topic: Most the Blu-Ray movies I've watched are great eye candy. Resistance is one of the most fun FPS I've played in ages, and better than anything I've played since HL2. Gears is technically 3rd person, so I don't count that. The A.I. is seriously weak would be my biggest complaint with the game. Still haven't jumped in on MP yet, and I hear that is where it really shines.

The only things I don't like are no rumble, and the controller scheme and its battery, so I guess the controller period, is my only complaint. Being able to use 3rd party HDD, great audio, great DVD upscan, including F@H, emotion engine, built-in wifi, HDMI, bluetooth, its all good. :)

The lack of a standard HDD is a more immediate problem with the 360. The DVD9 may become a problem down the road, for instance id's RAGE needs to ship on 2 DVDs on the 360. The PS3 is expensive but it's the full package. It's really put together well, quiet (when then fans don't kick into 360 mode), and future-proof. The 360 keeps playing catchup (HDMI added later, HD-DVD add-on, the Core holding games back). It's obvious Sony's strengths are hardware where MS strengths are software.

The 360 has better software and price ATM, it's really the only thing holding the PS3 back completely.

With the deals on the 60gb PS3 lately, price isn't even a real complaint anymore IMO, considering all it offers for the money.

It's silent until it starts to get a workout. Then the fan kicks in.

But that fan certainly isn't a low-quality fan. That fan is what keeps the PS3 alive whereas the 360 would die :)

Eh, even with the negatives of the 360 compared with the PS3, and even after my second 360 died just two days ago, I'll still take another 360 over the PS3 at this point.

Why is that exactly?

The only thing bad about the PS3 at this point is that it has so few good games. That will of course change soon enough. For now, its the only valid "problem" with the system that I see (other than maybe the $$).

I also have a 360 and never really planned on getting a PS3. When I bought a new TV they threw in a free PS3, and I was blown away by what a great machine it is.

Im pretty sure the only reason I have not gotten the red rings of death on my 360 is because I never turn it on anymore...

(although it is about to get some action again with bioshock coming out...)

Just curious why your hatin' on the PS3 so much.

that is being blown way out of proportion. its runs the same as any madden game for the past few years. this years 360 version is very good, but none of the other versions are unplayable.

I just got mine and have tried out a bunch of demos so far.

I am more impressed with some of the games than I expected, but overall I would say the PS3 is pretty much what I expected.

The hardware is awesome though. The PS3 honestly seems like it's put together like a tank. The machine is just solid as hell. It's also very quiet (I haven't played an actual game in it though, only demos) so I do n't know if it gets louder when a game is in it (like the 360 does).

But now back to the demos ...

Every demo is very mediocore IMO, aside from Motorstorm. I had only played Motorstorm demo in the store, but the one on the PSN is definitely from a better build. The game is freaking awesome and the graphics are very top notch. I'm really liking that game.

Also Resistance, initially I was not impressed with at all and felt so generic. But when I went back to the demo for a 2nd time it felt a lot more fun. I was playing it a lot differently, taking cover and popping up from cover, shooting, and going back. It's definitely not a run/gun game or else you will get your ass handed to you. I'm liking it a lot and hope I can find it used for a nice price, along with motorstorm.

Other than those 2 games, nothing is really standing out big time. All the other demos are mediocore. Heavenly Sword may be good, but it needs some work, and apparently the demo is old.

As a whole, I think the "dash" on the Xbox360 is a lot nicer than the PS3's interface, however I think the PS Store is better than the XBL marketplace.

In general, the PS3 is what I expected pretty much and I have no regrets getting in on the deal for $350 for it. There are games coming out soon that I know I will want, and I sent out for my 5 free BR movies yesterday so I have those coming in a month or whenever.

Still Resistance ain't Gears of War :)

Now Show Gears of War and Bioshock on your 1080p plasma to your friends and family, they will be wowed : )

Also the only game that system has coming this year is heavenly sword :!

XBOX 360 :
Halo 3
Bioshock
Mass effect
eternal sonata
Lost odyssey

Which are enough to blow the whole PS3 software library :(

I ain't happy with my PS3 !

May I ask what good a console is if it doesn't have games? My biggest problem with the PS3 is that all my friends are on XBL playing Gears, Shadowrun, and pretty soon Halo 3 and COD4. Also Microsoft has always had more attractive games for me than Sony. Combine that with a better controller IMO and an affordable price tag and I have to gripes.

What.

Eye of Judgement
Folk Lore
GT5 Prologue
Heavenly Sword
Hot Shots Golf 5
Lair
Little Big Planet
Ratchet & Clank
SingStar
SOCOM
Warhawk

Even if they don't all appeal to you, that's a damn good list IMO.

(note that these are only the first/second party games)

i gotta say man ... to those sony fanboys comparing the graphics of resistance to gears of war ... they have to be on crack.

resistance does not even look REMOTELY close to anything as good as gears of war graphically. not even close at all.

The Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo is awesome. I never wanted to run out and buy a game from a demo until I played NGS.

Personally I'd write off Hot Shots Golf and SingStar pretty quickly, but that's personal opinion. Never heard of "Eye of Judgement" , or "Folk Lore" so I can't comment on those. Lair was initially reviewed to be a pretty mediocre title, although the recent delay gives it some hope I suppose.

Little Big Planet does look really interesting, but it isn't coming out until early 08. I could see myself getting Warhawk and possible SOCOM, but to me the lineup of games is pretty lack luster. They do seem to have a wide variety of games, but in doing so they only get a couple from genres I'd enjoy playing.

With Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Halo 3 coming out on 360 this fall the PS3 has little to compare.

Actually the PS3 has a weaker GPU than the Xbox 360 and also much less memory. Some articles I've read over the months said that the lack of memory is forcing publishers to use Z-compression. Major Nelson was also ranting how the Cell can't do vector math and all but one core is dedicated to float points.

except for mine... I think mine is one of the Chinese-made PS3's, which have 15blades on the main fan, as opposed to 19. Well, I've heard that the 15-blade is insanely loud at times, almost matching the X360 in noise. Now, I never heard it in my dorm, but I did hear my roomie's 360. However, I hear the PS3 over everything in my room, but then again it gets real warm, and I have it standing vertical (horizontal in my dorm).

I've already played it on Xbox when it came out, and it still has the flaws that made me dislike that one. The camera in that game is annoying as hell, and I hate when you go to first person view, it doesn't switch to the angle your guy was facing, but instead just keeps the direction your camera was facing.
