Ps3 gimping continues....

Let us get realistic. Those who wanted the PS3 for Linux/Dev Purposes most likely has one already. I hope that Ps4 comes with the same Linux support. Toss it on in the beginning, and after a while you can rmove it.

For everyone 'pimping' Linux support, do you even use it?

Given what the PS3 is, yes, that is a fairly good trade off for most people. Integration into a proper AV setup is certainly a big selling point of the PS3 over the other systems, and adding HDMI-CEC is certainly a good move towards that end.

thats not the point though. its the value they claimed when they brought out the ps3. it would take the place of your ps2 which can be useful, and just a nice feature to have. then they gimped the hardware support. they at least had software emulation, but then now they've removed even that. that move is pure greed to sell more ps2s.

Removing Linux is no big deal IMO... how many people really used that? I installed it and never really used it... sucks that I lost 10 GB of my hard drive, I guess some day I'll reformat it and get that back. I'm not sure what they saved by not supporting Linux anymore though.

I don't know why BC is still a big deal. It's been gone for a long time now. It's also a feature that I think only a small subset of users desire. It costs money to put it in. Even if it's only $20 per console, that may be $200 per customer who actually wants it.
 
Most of your quotes (the few I checked) arent even real quotes.

Guess what, things change. Farve did want to play afterall. Imo, most people complaining about this, dont even have a PS3 and/or play PS2 games on it.

Well, just like MS's $100 wireless adapter for the 360 being pure greed. Every company does it to some degree I suppose.

From what I understand, not true nowadays. Bravia Sync is just Sony's name for HDMI-CEC, and HDMI-CEC is a real standard.

Back in the bad old days, when everyone had their own little HDMI-CEC implementation, you might have been correct.
 
OK, so all this HDMI-CEC will do is turn on the PS3 when my TV is set to the right input? How does that help me work around the lack of IR? Turning my PS3 on doesn't make it do anything, I still need to either use a controller or the Blu-Ray remote to do something - and both of those have a power button on them. What am I missing? Will HDMI-CEC let me use my TV remote to control a PS3?

This is the trend here on this forum. It's funny because it's usually the people who have nothing else to care about. For most people, it'll be transparent and once brought up they'll be like, "Oh, what? Linux gone? meh. DRM? Game runs fine. *Continues playing*"

Those that are pissed about linux being removed....what exactly is it that you use linux for on your ps3? If it was the main reason you bought a PS3 and this change renders it useless then you bought the PS3 for the wrong reasons.

I love how some people here just define the reasons you should or shouldn't buy something using their own criteria and denigrating everyone else's, as though their opinions are the only ones that could possibly matter. You'd think it would physically hurt them to expand their horizons a bit. Maybe they're just mentally incapable? Who knows?

Anyways, it is entirely possible that some folks like having a backup computer that doesn't cost them more than 10gb of HDD space (assuming they were buying a PS3 anyways), or perhaps wanted to experiment cheaply with Cell programming. The PS2 had something of a rich history of allowing people to experiment with PS2 programming cheaply by using the Linux kit, and it was heartening to see Sony do it with the PS3.

I can't believe fanboys are griping still. There's not really much left to dis the PS3 for except maybe PSN but you get what you get for free.
 
I have a 60gb BC PS3.. I installed linux just to do it, no intentional purpose, used for about 2 minutes, and never used it again. I also used my ps3 to play God of War 1 and 2, since i never had a PS2, and will probably never use that feature again. So the people that are bitching about taking these features out, buy a PS3 slim and i'll trade lol, i need more room anyway.
