PS3 died with a rental inside!

Hey guys,

After about 10 months or so, my 60gb PS3 has finally died. I was using it with a rental inside when it abruptly shut off, never to turn on again (no lights, devoid of life). I am currently searching for the store receipt, but I need to extract the rental disk before I RMA it. Any ideas how to remove the disk without voiding the warrant while the unit will not power on?

Thanks

I do not like it when expensive products die so young:(

update 1: Store receipt found, still within warranty. On the phone with Sony currently, on hold for 20 minutes so far:(

update 2: Sony contacted, rep said that they can remove the rental at the repair center and send it back to me. About 30 minutes on hold, not as bad as I expected. RMA accepted, return shipping box inbound.

I worked at Blockbuster years ago and I remember this happening to someone with a last gen console.

Basically call the store you rented it from, speak with the manager and explain what happened. More then likely they will wave any fees for being late and such as long as you show proof of your story, like an invoice of some type showing work.

Had it happen with a few people and DVD's as well, same thing.

Wait, so the PS3 doesn't have any manual way of opening the drive? That seems like a pretty big misstep from sony, as these things have to happen often enough.

No power = no eject :(
I am 95% certain the PSU in it is completely shot based on behavior before it died.

I am sure it does, but the paper-clip eject slot is probably underneath the outer-housing, the removal of which would void my warranty.

Yeah, I was poking around the PS3 manuals and doing some Googling to see if there was any other way to get the disc out. Short of taking the case apart, that appears to be a no. That's a really dumb design decision for an otherwise well put together console.

All slot-loading drives have this problem, AFAIK. Of all things, I wouldn't blame Sony for this one.

Except for, you know, using a SLOT-LOADING DRIVE IN THE PS3.

I happen to prefer the slot-load.

(But I've never had a disc stuck in there ;))

Yeah, slot-loading seems more convenient - the 360's tray just seems a little flimsy. But, certainly, this is one of those times where it's a little annoying.

I wonder what causes this...this same thing happened to my 60GB. I was playing CoD4, and it randomly shut off. Couldn't turn it back on again.

Thankfully, it was my game in there and not a rental.

Well, the return box arrived and I shipped it back. Strange, the return box was sent to me via UPS 3-day... the return label they sent to put on it is UPS Next-Day. They must really not want UPS to have the PS3 for very long:evil:

I think it gets returned to you via 3-day. Hopefully they won't fuck up your return/issue.

You know, if you were sure it was the power supply, I would have suggested going to the rental place with your PS3 and asking if they have any rental units with power supplies you could borrow.

Hefty downtime, I believe they said it could take a week to process it once they get it. I just hope that they send me back a 60gb (if they have to replace it). I am going to be very angry if they send me an 80gb refurb with no hardware backwards compatibility and tell me that it was an "upgrade" from my 60gb. I doubt they have to replace the entire thing, I am 90% that it is the PSU based on my past experience with PCs behaving in a similar manner. Although years ago, I did have a cheap PSU fry the integral components of a PC... so it is possible, but highly unlikely with modern PSUs.

PS3 has an internal power supply, unfortunately.

Do you know what INTERNAL means? You can't swap them out, it's part of the console that the game is in. Just like how ipods have INTERNAL batteries. They aren't removable.

Funny thing, my PS3 just died the same way tonight with Madden09 inside from gamefly.
The non-funny part is that I missed warranty by 20 days and will have to payup 150$ for the new power supply.....

Oh darn, I forgot about that. I did that with my Xbox 360 but of course that has that big external power brick.
