It'd be hilarious if there was a shortage in Japan and none in the U.S. Market, after Sony screwed their core, but I'll bet they'll have a shortage to remember.

With them starting manufacturing so late, I'm wondering if they'll even reach the new launch number.

Let's recap shall we?
- PS3 launching worldwide Spring 2006
- PS3 launcing worldwide Fall 2006 with 2 million units and 6 million units by the end of the fiscal year
- PS3 launcing worldwide Fall 2006 with 2 million units by the end of 2006
- PS3 launching worldwide Fall 2006 with 4 million units by end of 2006
- PS launching with 100,000 in Japan, 400,000 in North America, and zero in Europe

Next?

Consider this as well. What % of the SKUs are going to be the $500 and $600 versions? That will cause further shortages as well.

No matter how you slice it, this is very bad news for Sony. Analysts in Japan are already predicting that the extreme shortages (only 100k units at launch) will give the already popular Wii a big headstart during the holiday season. That, plus the $170 pricetag on the Wii, means that Sony and Nintendo are predicted to stay about even in hardware sales for most of this generation.

Not launching in Europe during the holidays is going to cost PS3 software developers an estimated $140 million in lost software sales.

What a disaster for Sony and people who actually wanted to play a PS3 this year.

it's official the wii is $170?

In Japan, yes; the US price is still up in the air, but should be ~$200, give or take.

show me the link. i have yet to see them confirm any price at all. All they've confirmed is what it will be LESS than. They haven't confirmed a date yet either.

I wouldn't call it official but:
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, executive VP and COO of EA's worldwide studios, David Gardner, has revealed that the publisher believes the console will retail for around US $170 in North America.
In an interview to be published later this week, Gardner said: "I've heard in Japan that the price is about $170, but I don't know if the price has been set in Europe yet."
Gardner went on to discuss the key differences between Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's new console, saying he was confident that the Wii will find its niche in the market as consumers' 'second' console.
"Nintendo has come up with a very clever strategy," Gardner said.
"They've made a choice which is great for the consumer. Now we're going to have a choice whereby consumers can buy a Wii, plus one other console."
Nintendo has so far declined to reveal exact details of a release date or price point for the Wii. However, the company has previously confirmed that the console will retail for less than US $250, and will launch before the end of this year - with shipments estimated to total 6 million by the end of March 2007.

TGS is just around the corner. I'm sure it will be official by then.

well with every person trying to buy 4-5, it will make this shortage worse. I still think that consoles shortages are made worse by people who try to scalp them.

if i were sony I would just suck it, and produce as many to release the week or two before christmas. Launching in november with barely any units is stupid. Even if they laucnh 3-4 days before Christmas....they'll still sell out. Better to try to provide as many possible.

I predict things won't get better till March

Today is THE DAY Nintendo should give out all final Wii info. Strike while the wound is fresh. "$199 (or less), Oct 22nd release date, 1 million units for launch". It would make people jump I bet.

Bwahahahahahahaha

Walmart will have trouble procuring 50-100 units at their biggest stores. Your only chance is to get 100 of your buddies together, spread yourselfs across the city at least 24 hours before launch, and wait.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox360By year's end Microsoft had sold 1.5 million units; including 900,000 in North America, 500,000 in Europe, and 100,000 in Japan.[12] Only six games were initially offered in Japan and eagerly anticipated titles like Dead or Alive 4 and [eM] -eNCHANT arM- were not released until several weeks after launch ...

Look at the those XBOX 360 numbers and extrapolate out 400,00 US and 100,000 Japanese PS3's and it becomes almost ridiculous. This is almost a massive paper launch by Sony.
