These are the scores I got for my new gaming system, wasn't really sure if these were average given my system specs. This was my first time using 3DMark.

Scores:
'03 - 15817
'05 - 6907

System:
Pentium D 830
Ati x1800 XT
d945 Intel Mobo
2GB PQI DDR2533 CL3

Those pentium D's are crap, and I agree should have gone AMD for 3D performance.

On my 7800GT OCed to 480/1200 I'm getting upwards to 8000, and that's low for my OC.

3dmark05 is GPU dependant...NOT CPU dependant....the proc makes no difference unless it is a complete bottleneck. mark05 is a GPU bench...

I didn't think the CPU had a big effect on 3dmark 05??

I was just making the point that he has a WAY better video card than me and still has a lower score...

My 12 pipe X800GTO gets 6400 in 3dmark05. If your only getting 6900, something must be wrong.

no that is completely erong. 3dmark is cpu independent until you reach higher scores. then it becomes cpu dependant. what did you think 03, 01 and 00 are cpu limited because they were designed to be? no. they were gpu limited until the gpus passed them by and they became cpu limited becasue the gpuswere able ot process info faster than the cpu could.

around the 6-7k mark, the benchmark can become cpu dependant. 6907 is actually pretty decent for that cpu.

I was just looking up the Futuremark ORB results and the 2 people with intel dualcores get 6488 on the 3ghz dualcore and 6243 on the 2.8ghz dualcore with x1800s. Switching over to 7800gtx results, 6721 at 3.2ghz, 6849 at 3.011ghz, 6887 at 3ghz, 6939 at 3.0ghz, 7135 at 3.36ghz and 7198 at 3.2ghz and 8434 at 3.2ghz. Everyone has 2gigs of ram except for 1 that has 1 gig and these are all the default settings.

it's not a card issue op, your cpu just sucks. sorry you spent so much on it.

i actually didn't really spend much on it. $215 for the CPU + Mobo + XP Pro (all nib).

is this limitation limited to benchmarking? am I going to see a bottleneck in game performance as a result of my CPU?

I wouldn't worry about that score since it's not something you're going to notice in a real world situation. Sure, you could've gotten a better score with a faster AMD cpu but most games are more dependant on the GPU when cranking up the details like AA and AF.

1. yes it wil limit game performance. there are almost no reviews for 830s but many for 820s and at Tbreak, with a 7800gtx, they still only scored 6500 in 3dmark05 so the ORB results are confirmed. In most games, with your cpu and gpu combo, a amd64 athalon 3500+ will be between 15-40% faster in newer games like BF2 and Farcry at 1280x1024. so instead of say 73fps, you might get 62 or 65fps average. it;s still playable and enjoyable by far, just that you are being limited by your cpu. a weaker 6800gs would've been a better pairing of value and performance.

a better question will be if it will affect your gaming enjoyment?. to that, i would say not too much. the games still run at good framerates and the difference between say 170fps and 110fps isnt noticible to normal people. it really more affects your price/performance value standpoint seeing as you overspent by around $300 on the video card.

make sure all image quality enhancements are off

ie. aa, af, and iq is set to performance, i dunno what it is on an ati card, and vsync is off

You won't notice a difference if you game at 1600X1200 with AA/AF, but when you start going down with res/AA/AF settings the CPU will start to show its lack of speed. But if you got all that for 215$, then enjoy the system!

It actually depends on the games you'll be playing. Most games at 1600x1200 won't show much improvement with a faster proc. HL2 is one that definetely will. I saw big increases at 1680x1050 4AA/16AF when I oced my chip from 2.2GHz to 2.85GHz. UT2004 will also see a big improvement with a faster proc.

What res are you going to playing at?

I agree with you. At higher 3DMark05 scores the cpu will start to make a big difference. With my cpu@stock (2.0GHz) I score about 9600, with the cpu@2.9GHz I get about 12,600. 3000 points just from ocing the cpu.

I guess your Pentium D was throttling during the test. Those P-Ds run like a toaster, and many people are having throttling issues.

i dont get it tho.....how can a 3 ghz pentium D hold that score down that much?
