I play FEAR COMBAT online with all details maxed (no soft shadows) but no AA/AF @ 1680x1050, and the game doesn't work as smoothly as I thought it would.

Anyone out there with a similar setup that can tell me whether this is normal or not?

Also the game stutters once in a while, not even during firefights just walking around it stutters sometimes.

Anyway any help is appreciated as always :)

And also I get this wierd "ripping" on my viewsonic vx2025wm when I shoot, like a lot of black "lines" show up across the screen, more visible when I'm shooting in dark areas. I try capturing it in fraps and it doesn't show up in the video . Had the same
problem with the 2005fpw I had.

Update ***

Ok, I finally fixed the problem, I disabled Catalyst A.I. in tray tools and it completely fixed the problem!

Thanks for all your help guys I appreciate it.

p.s. I had the same problem with my 7800gtx, what could explain that if it was catalyst AI doing it?

UPDATE Problem came back, even with AI off it still does it now :|

I uploaded some video's from my SD600 canon (fraps wouldn't show it) If you guys need anything else lmk.

I have an X1800XT 512 and i experience the same phenomenon in FEAR. I think it's because FEAR is (i believe) an OpenGL game. I still dont think it should happen, because a friend of mine can run the game at the same settings without the stutter on a 7600GT

And it isnt network related btw

F.E.A.R. is very much Direct3D, but I'm not sure why you're all having problems with it as it played great for me on my X1800XT 256 and my X1900XT 512 with some very high settings and AA/AF.

Probably drivers.. sigh it took me some courage to order an X1950 today. I hope I don't experience unexplainable quirks with ATI drivers this time.

"How can it be that bad with an ATi card? It can actually be better... because it can do HDR+AA..." :p (j/k)

Sounds like an internet connection problem to me. Does it happen offline? Also, why don't you have any AF? AF is basically free to use and great to see.

Well I'm trying to keep the frames up.. your saying the hit isn't significant?

Ok guys, there is definitly something wrong here. I set all the cpu settings to low, ran it at 640x480 and it still stuttered (it ran alot smoother though)

I then raised the rez to 1280x860 or something like that and it still stuttered.

Anyone here have any suggestions as to how to fix this? Thanks for any help

It isn't as significant as the AA. For the X1900's HQAF in FEAR isn't exactly a huge burden. 16xHQAF is the standard for all of my games--FEAR, Oblivion, CoH, CoD2, BF2, Source, Prey, Far Cry, TR:L, etc. Maybe you're okay with it, but I can't stand jaggies and bland textures.

Once again, did this happen on offline play or online?

Do you have the correct chipset drivers installed?

It's online but I always have great ping so I don't see that as a problem.

What do you mean by chipset drivers?

have u tried uninstalling and using 6.6 drivers? (6.6's are known to be very stable and never gave anyone any problems)

I'm going to first install the chipset drivers (not sure if I did it) and then if that dones't work I'll try going to 6.6

I had the same problem with FEAR when I first got an X1900XTX & was able to correct it by enabling V-sync... might want to give that a try.

The problem here is that there are a billion individual 'your rig' specific things it could be, from mobo drivers, to sound card drivers, to BIOS settings, to the way you installed your drivers, to another program stealing cpu cycles intermittently, to most likely you're internet connection. Try playing OFFLINE before you start exploring other possibilities, it's by far the easiest thing to check ;)

It amazes me that people continue to clutch to this bizarre belief that ATI are the only ones who ever have driver quirks :p

I've had plenty of minor (and a few major) driver quirks with both nvidia and ATI, and i'm extremely loth to say their either company is 'better' these days with regard to drivers. This is also the impression i get from *most* people who've actually used both companies in the last few years.

Ok I tried installing the 6.6 drivers and when I get into windows my desktop is at 640x480 4bit color and I can't change it to anything higher. It took me awhile (cuz you can't see anything) But I installed 6.8 drivers and now I'm going to restart to see if it fixed it.

Online "stutter" is caused by the server. There are a lot of servers offering up 16 players that can't properly handle 8 and the performance suffers terribly.

Try playing the single-player game (or even the free Extraction Point demo) and see how that goes.

I hosted my own game, and it still does it.

If it were me, I would install the newest chipset drivers if you haven't already, install the AMD Dual Core Optimizer, uninstall the 6.8's, boot into safe mode and use Driver Cleaner Pro to get rid of any last vestiges of ATI drivers, than boot back into Windows and install the 6.9 Display Driver only and the most recent ATI Tray Tools release. Let us know if that helps.

Also make sure you have the most up to date X-Fi drivers as they can be a little finicky from what I've read.
