Ok, can somebody explain Palladium and why it is so bad?

here

OMFG you can't be serious!!!!!!!! My gut tells me that there has to be some kind of constitutional violation here. Common!!!!! Microsoft CANNOT be allowed to implement this!!

:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|:disgust::|

So I wonder why people are looking forward to this because..... :|

Eventually, all will be made to bow before the awesome power that is the corporation.............

WOW, it looks almost EXACTLY like XP now...

Hopefully they'll be some major change to kernel, or a new file system, or something to make it worthwhile.

changes in the kernel or filesystem would not change how the OS looks.

No, but maybe the changes in the kernel (the filesystem i am perfectly happy about, NTFS 5 is a VERY good filesystem) can exclude some of the extra services not needed for everyone?

But as MS will never see the difference about the kernel and the modules of the OS, this will not happen...

If you ask me, MS are leaving the market open for those who are not as scared to invent and scream...

And I think I might upgrade...

my desktop from WinXP to Win2000...

...and my server from Win2k Server to Linux.

😛

BTW, interesting comment by BBWF about the sidebar coming from QNX. I had played with the OS a while back, and didn't really care for that space-consuming "feature." I guess it has its uses, for some people. 😕

Dang, I guess I'm in the minority here, but I actually like XP, and am looking forward to Longhorn. Disclaimer: I hated all Microsoft's operating systems until XP. It was actually the only thing keeping me from going to Linux. Although I have to admit that the activation fiasco almost pushed me to the edge.....

If WPA pushed you to the edge, Palladium/TCPA will push you clear over it.

tru dat. I'm watching and waiting to see just what the Hell MS is going to do about the flocks of pissed off people that install Longhorn. I've got a Mac and a linux box, and both are truly usable for everyday computing. Both will just get better in the next 2 years....

Firstly, LH 4008 is not a beta. It is alpha. Don't make huge judgements based on it.

Having that been said, here's a quick list of "miscellaneous cool stuff coming with Longhorn":

New filesystem (WinFS) based off SQL database structure.

Direct3D accelerated GUI - take that, OSX.

Dramatic change in appearance from alpha versions. Remember how XP looked in early Whistler days. Apparently 3D elements are expected to be integrated. (I felt this needed bolding.)

Palladium will be added.

Sidebar - to make ObjectDock obsolete. 😛

The fact alone that it has Palladium will be enough for me to stick with Win2k. FVCK PALLADIUM.

Ah, but don't you see?

The flocks of mindless sheep that install Longhorn won't even know TCPA/Palladium is running behind the scenes - that is, until little Jimmy tries to download an MP3. Then the black helicopters hover over your house, the men in SWAT gear descend, and Uncle Bill takes away your desktop, leaving behind nothing but a little black business card carrying one word.

"0wnt."

Uh, I hate to break this to you, the 3683 build is NOT a beta release of Longhorn. That is an Alpha release. Too many people I know of and sites who have gotten ahold of copies for review and testing, especially those I know who are certified Microsoft Developers have all been told this is only an Alpha release and is in no way a beta. So to start off with, your story is wrong. Secondly, longhorn still has well over a YEAR of development left before it's all done. For one none of the DRM and TCPA/DMCA stuff is in there. Also, you failed to mention that this alpha release is also very unstable. Personally, from what I've seen of it, it's just another money grab OS project of Microsoft. Basically a waste of the bits its made of.

its amazing how much ingonrance and FUD is in this thread.
...and it's amazing how much the MS people want to hype up Palladium while attempting to downplay its big-brother spying capabilities and its security implications.

<sarcasm> Gee, I'm sorry I failed to post that about halfway down the first page. And I failed to get it quoted again several times. Please, forgive my ignorance. </sarcasm>
