Firstly, LH 4008 is not a beta. It is alpha. Don't make huge judgements based on it.

Dramatic change in appearance from alpha versions. Remember how XP looked in early Whistler days. Apparently 3D elements are expected to be integrated. (I felt this needed bolding.)

Did you miss that part?

Do you think I care? Milestone or not, the GUI still sucks! 😉

One of the TAs for my Information in Cyberspace class at UT was saying that MS and UT have some kind of agreement, which is why they are using the name Longhorn. I dunno if that's true, but it makes sense.

Your TA is making that up. Whistler is the codename for the server release (2003 server), Longhorn is a bar (yes this is a real place) at the foot of Whistler Mountain.

Longhorn is a pretty random name for an OS.

It's not the name of the OS, it's the codename. I've had some pretty random codenames on projects I've worked on (and am working on) also.

I think it looks all right. That skin looks a lot better than the default XP skin.

I like the choice of wallpaper in pics 3 and 4, though. Anyone know where I can find something like that?

Palladium is the content control system, correct? Does this mean that you'll need compliant hardware to run the new OS?

No you won't. Obviously you will need to have palladium hardware to use any software or services that require it, but the base OS does not.

...Yet another reason why I switched to Linux a year ago and haven't looked back since.

LMAO 😀

I like that bar along the side, kind of like the Today screen on a pocketpc. I wish there was some way to do that now, so I could have my outlook appointments right on my desktop, as all I use outlook standard for is the calander.

Looks like the Red Alert menu bar. :disgust:

Hopefully they'll be some major change to kernel, or a new file system, or something to make it worthwhile.

You got that right. If they continue to write the look of the same damn OS over and over its just going to force me to like Linux. 😛

Please explain the advantage here over what they already do in XP. Even if it supports 3D objects, how is this an improvement in the OS?

Yeah, I thought I read a while ago, the code names were taken from some resort type area close to Redmond or something, and I remember it having to do with certain names there.

FOUND IT:
Another area of focus for us in terms of technology transfer over this next year is going to be really working significantly with the product teams in getting ready for the next really major release of Windows, which for us has been codenamed "Longhorn." Some of you may have seen that in the press. It has nothing to do with Texas. It's actually I think a bar between Whistler and Blackcomb in Canada, the two ski resorts, the two ski mountains there, and we had the last major release of Windows was codenamed Whistler. The one that is supposed to come next, as far as later, is Blackcomb, and the one in between is Longhorn. But we're working hard with the various product teams to do that.

Whistler's UI was very nice (the flat one), but WinXP's is horrible. If the same thing happens, we can only imagine how horrible LH will be when it ships.

And this is worth buying because?... they already gave us XP, this thing looks like XP, why not just give out the bug fixes in a SP. At this point the only advertisement they could possibly give for buying this is "well our last OS sucked, we didn't program it very good, so now buy this much more stable one" :|

It's amazing how people can make a statement like that based on 6 non official screen shots that may or may not show what the next os may or may not look like. There has been no discussion at all on what features the os may contain, just how pretty or not pretty it is. All we are missing is a few MAC folks to point out how they still look better 😉

Bill

Yeah, i mean what can you tell from 6 pictures. Several people have stated that it will look quite a bit differant then the pics. Plus you can't tell of any significant changes(like the new file system)by looking at pics.

The new object filesystem sounds cool. Being OS X already does a hardware rendered GUI Longhorn is pretty much a me-too OS.
