Preview of MS Longhorn (beta OS)

The last shot is either broken or not there.

I like that bar along the side, kind of like the Today screen on a pocketpc. I wish there was some way to do that now, so I could have my outlook appointments right on my desktop, as all I use outlook standard for is the calander.

WOW, it looks almost EXACTLY like XP now...

Hopefully they'll be some major change to kernel, or a new file system, or something to make it worthwhile.

One of the TAs for my Information in Cyberspace class at UT was saying that MS and UT have some kind of agreement, which is why they are using the name Longhorn. I dunno if that's true, but it makes sense. Longhorn is a pretty random name for an OS.

Where did you get an M3 build of longhorn?

Just to be very clear those screen shots are not indiciative of any beta or preview release.

changes in the kernel or filesystem would not change how the OS looks.

GUI is rendered using direct X isnt it? If so, thats a good jump, for windows I guess (like OSX).

Ameesh works for Microsoft.

bleh, its fugly.

I think MS should hire some UI people that aren't visually impared.

WinXP's interface was horrible, and I it doesn't look like this one will be much better.

Firstly, LH 4008 is not a beta. It is alpha. Don't make huge judgements based on it.

Having that been said, here's a quick list of "miscellaneous cool stuff coming with Longhorn":

New filesystem (WinFS) based off SQL database structure.

Direct3D accelerated GUI - take that, OSX.

Dramatic change in appearance from alpha versions. Remember how XP looked in early Whistler days. Apparently 3D elements are expected to be integrated. (I felt this needed bolding.)

Palladium will be added.

Sidebar - to make ObjectDock obsolete. 😛

They're looking at more than that, apparently. The "desktop" will be "2 1/2-D" with windows being positioned in the Z-axis as well.

Worst. GUI. EVAR.

It looks even more like a fisher-price toy than XP! Why does the clock need to take up a good 16% of the screen? What's with the huge blue thing in the window in this pic? It is now clearer then ever that the MS UI designers have switched their focus away from usability and practicality, and towards pretty colors and filling up as much of the screen as possible with useless decorations. I know that this is a milestone build and it will look very different by the time it goes beta, but it's easy to see where they're going with it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't like it.

Yet another reason why I switched to Linux a year ago and haven't looked back since.
