@330 not really, it's 2.5x bw my deadlift last week without a belt or chalk was 525 or 2.44x my bw. I know % of bw isn't linear scaling and blah blah but really give me ~100lbs of fairly lean mass and I know I could pull 830+

when you get to these extreme weights the whole multiple of body weight doesn't always factor in.... glad you agree

When you put on that 100 lbs of weight, report back to us and see if you are pulling 830+... until then you stating you could is ignorant. You do realize this was the heaviest pull ever at this event?

For the record, a belt doesn't move the weight, nor does chalk.

I'm not going to load up on steroids to prove you wrong, I will however keep gaining at ~215 should be pulling 600+ by the end of the year, barring another(minor) back injury and I'll keep going from there. The heaviest pull at that event sure, but far from the heaviest deadlift http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M13EBl_jF0 (200lbs heavier)

And chalk and the belt don't move the weight but the sure as hell help with grip and keeping his back straight, if they didn't help they wouldn't use them. I'll use them when I feel they're necessary which isn't yet, my grip is fine and I want to strengthen by lower back as much as possible and use belts for 1RM pulls as I go past 600lbs.

Keep on hatin...

first off, you are the one hatin'

second off, I pull deads with no belt and don't consider it an aid for those that use one. They are part of the game. not like he is using straps

even at you goal of 600, you are 230+ lbs away from that lift..... that is a lot of weight. your 540 or whatever you posted is plenty legit. Good for you. But please keep in mind, this 837 pull is likely more than your current dead + your current bench COMBINED... maybe it isn't, but regardless, probably in the same ballpark

third, when, where, why, how did steriods become part this discussion?

4th, never said it was the heaviest ever. merely said it was a legit, impressive lift. You come out knocking it when you are a measly 300 lbs away from it....

800+ pounds is a very impressive deadlift no matter what the bodyweight ratio is. Very few people can do it. Putting on 100+ pounds of lean mass is not exactly an easy feat, either. If you did manage to do that, perhaps you could pull 830 - but the fact is its extremely difficult to pull that one off, as well.

I've pulled 2.9x in competition, and I certainly would not consider myself in this guy's league.

Not knocking it, it just isn't all that impressive to me. Is it heavy as fuck? yes. But I think I'll be close to it and be considerably lighter in the next few years, again barring injury. Steroids is what it would take for me to get that much mass and stay fairly lean in the 'short term' it would still take me over a year on several cycles to add that kind of mass.

It may be 300lbs more than my current max but it's also only ~150% of my current 1RM

Right I'm not saying it's not heavy but it just doesn't seem all that impressive to me, especially at his weight. Not many people can deadlift 500lbs either but I don't think that's impressive either. I'm sure there are many more pulling 500 than 800 but it also has to do with the number of people that can maintain 300+lbs of body weight and not be complete fat asses anyway, I think. There is no way I could put on 100lbs without a ton of 'help' and even then it would take a while...

Maybe I'm just not impressed easily :colbert:

and plenty of cars can go 170-180 mph, relative few that go 200+...

I think you are severely underestimating how hard it will be for you to gain those last 300 lbs on your lift.

540+ is still a strong lift, 600, even better, but at these big weights, it is about the real numbers, not % or body weight ratios

go to the gym tomorrow, throw on about 700-750 lbs on the bar..... give it a pull, then realize this guy probably does triples or better at that weight. if you aren't impressed at that point, throw on the 837 and give it a shot. I bet it becomes pretty impressive by the time you get done loading the bar

No doubt that this guy deserves props for the training he's done to achieve this. However, and I realize everyone's goals are subjective, there's no way in hell I would want to look like an egg with limbs in order to pull heavy weights up from the ground.

this guy is FAR from looking like an egg.

You must fall under that category of people that fear lifting heavy because you don't want to get "too big"....nor do you want to look like an "egg". pretty sure you have nothing to worry about looking like Brad Gillingham

Plus some people are just built for deadlifts. in any case if I could ever lift anything near 800lbs I would be pretty happy.

I am definitely not built for deads.... bench press? absolutely.
That said, I can hold my own on deads ;)

Nice blanket statement to make. As a matter of fact i do lift heavy as i realize the benefits of it. That being said, you don't realize that this guy is unhealthily overweight?

Yea, height is detrimental in some lifts, like the squat, but those long arms definitely help the deadlift.

Very impressive lift. Not only that, as has been said, people underestimate how difficult it is to even get to a bodyweight of 330#, let alone maintain it while remaining relatively lean. I don't do traditional deads very often, but I believe my personal best would be in the 2.4-2.5x bw range...and there's absolutely no way in hell, given how difficult that feels, that I'd expect to be able to pull 830+ even with the 150# this guy has on me.

We'll its a computer forum not a powerlifting or even a bb forum so its understandable that some posters might think in terms of linear scaling right up to the mid 800s which is monster territory.

Damn that's impressive and he's HUGE !

My personal best right now is 315 lbs and weighing 185 lbs...so it's not exactly 2 X BW lol !
