Heh, people still don't get it with Trump.
He's a populist.
Frank Luntz did a "mindfuck" experiment, subjecting 29 Trump or ex-Trump supporters to all kinds of negative input on Trump. This included a compilation of Trump Gaffes, attack ads including one by a retired Air Force Colonel, and negative media headlines.
This was the result :

Seems to me Luntz tapped into what was, is and forever will be that reflex nerve ending, that synaptic firing trigger that compels a CBD afflicted hard core mainlining Palin/Beck loving conservative that relies on their state of denial to maintain what they consider to be the reality that they wish to exist in.
Trump represents to them a world that they perceive is slipping from their grasp, a world in which they are losing control of. As such, the more you attack that world (Trump) the more they are going to try to defend it, no matter what damning evidence is laid at their feet that proves their world does not exist, or no longer exists.
Logic and common sense has no place in their world if it means having to give up what is real to them. Having to give up the delusion is akin to deciding to shut off the artificial respirator that keeps them alive.
They see Trump as their only hope for survival in a world that, as they see it, has gone mad.
They're the sane ones and everyone else is out to get them, as it were.
