Does that really have the ability to cause power outages? Wouldn't it be more widespread instead of just effecting the NE?

Yes it can wreak havoc on distribution systems. It seems the extreme NE part of US and Eastern Canada has been affected before.

Of course there are no guarantees. :) Cleveland reporting problems could be just a coincidence. Power is still flowing fine at Greenbelt, MD.

Checking CNN, can't find anything on it. Links anyone?

See the big read banner accross the top of the page that says "Breaking News".

It's in that.

"Power outages reported in Northeast, including New York City, and other cities including Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan. Details soon."

How informative...

It just happened. I wouldn't expect a 1000 word article on it.

I would. It didn't mention anything about the grid being ungridded...
You can report live on TV, i'm sure they don't have someone sitting there adding words every millisecond for the website.

I thought they had monkeys or pigeons entering that stuff in.

You on a lappy or something?

Oh by the way, fun fact: phone lines carry power, although not very much. Something like 16 volts at 50mA or something. (They calculate long distance by how much voltage and amperage you draw to connect) You might be able to google for it.

Why is your name Nevada when you live in New Jersey? :p

Considering that the power went out and then came back in 30 seconds or so I'm almost sure it's a grid problem. It takes the systems a little bit to engage the routing systems when something like that happens.

Whatever happened it's big. Maybe big stupidity, but big nonetheless
