Anyone have the specs on the opterons? 800mhz or 1GHz fsb? Which stepping? I'm asking because I wanted to buy the opteron bundle and get the Asus K8N-DL(about $275), or the Thunder K8WE (S2895) (about$450). True x16 SLI baby! The Tyan K8WE only works with CG stepping or higher. So if they are giving old opterons its a bust unless you need a dedicated server. You think someone on eBay will pay $200-250 for the motherboard? That would come close to paying for the Asus board. And by the way, the crappy used opterons on ebay are old sledgehammer cores that don't support ddr400. If these are newer opterons this is one hell of a deal. New 246 opterons go for $300.

Anyone pick up the server bundle?
When purchasing, it says the mobo comes with u320 scsi. I'm confused.

ditto, the purchase thing says it DOES come with SCSI....

How would dual opterons perform compared to "normal" AMD desktop chips (like 3200+ and others)? If you could get a replacement motherboard with its cost offset by the motherboard included in the bundle then could the dual processors be worth for, say, gaming?

Hey Leaverus, did you buy the dual opteron combo or are you just guessing? If the opterons are CO stepping I won't get them. The deal then becomes so-so.:(

Good call, I see via Tyan's website that the K8WE doesn't support C0 stepping? Why is this, and will they work still or what? Looks like my server bundle is going to other uses than a workstation.

Ok, i picked up one of the server bundles; have it in hand right now and the model # is S2882G3NR-D, so it does NOT have SCSI.

That just makes me --> :( :( :(

What a crock of shit! the bloody checkout says "SCSI functionality" or whatever... speaking of which, is anyone else having a hell of a time getting on that page to order? I didnt do it right when i signed up but I went back later and it was fine, but now its not coming up. blarg, now i'm mad lol

Take a look here and see:
^ CG stepping or higher for CPU support (NO B0 or C0 stepping CPU's supported)

This applies for EVERY processor that the K8WE can take excluding the dual core ones, which I assume are already CG stepping. Once again, this means that a C0 stepping CPU may WORK, but it is not supported, meaning Tyan will not help you with any issues.

We should have had an "Anandtech" booth at the Chicago one, or a book to sign into or something, sounds like a fair number of the people there were AT'ers...

If the opterons are the old stepping it sucks, I'm going to go with the desktop bundle then. I wanted to build a workstation but I guess I wont be able to do it, that sucks. Is there anyway that we can check the stepping on the Opterons?

Can someone post some pics of the tour please? Also wanted to ask, can you bring a friend along or do they also have to register on the site first before they can attend?

Thanks

Yes, i actually bought the server combo and have the opterons in hand. The model and stepping i wrote earlier are correct.

Vivi, i'm sure it wouldn't be a problem bringing a friend. They make you sign in at the beginning, and then give you a bag of junk plus a pre-printed nametag to hang around your neck, but i doubt anyone would really mind if you had a buddy tag along.

This is a good info about the motherboard. They are testing with 246's too. USB 1.1 sucks, but I can use gigabit ethernet for transfers. RAM and heatsinks are my big issues, what to use?

Newegg is out of stock of the board. Maybe they should send everyone on tour!! >)

This is a list of all the different Opteron 246's. It would be interesting to see if everyone gets the same procs. BOXes are definately out.

if you can get both combos, sell the server one for 600(+100) or 700(+200), sell the venice chip for 150(+150). you can do this.
desktop -250 (-100 after selling the venice chip)
server -500 (+100 or +200 after selling the combo)
total -750 (+/- 0 or +100)
you will get the asus mb and xp64 for free and you can purchase this.

im pretty sure on ebay you can say if you chose the buy it now option, the buyer gets win 2k3 64 for free.

For those of you buying the desktop bundle, what RAM are you planning on using with the A8N-E?
