I'll throw out a couple...

-it should be eaten fish-side down on your tongue in order to experience the full flavor
-eel should be eaten last

Does anyone know why sushi bars are usually closed on Mondays?

Peace,
Dezign

1. It's raw fish and shellfish
2. If it's not a top-notch restaurant, you'll probably get very sick
3. They are closed on Mondays to get the fish out of the stream that runs along the back of the restaurant...cheaper that way.

Full Moon Sushi on Brookhurst/Ellis in Fountain Valley has a California Roll/Teriyaki Chicken/Rice/Salad/Miso Soup/Orange/Green Tea combo for lunches for only $5.50. And their California Rolls are some of the better ones i've had.

EDIT: Dinner's only $6.50 :)

1. Sushi is not raw fish, sashimi is raw fish.
2. If you're eating in the US, you're probably safe from getting sick.
3. I have no idea why they're closed on Mondays.

Don't eat uni. Hamatobi is good stuff. :)

NewSc2, I'm driving to Fountain Valley tonight after work. I know it's about an hour away, but... mmmm, sushi. *drools* Too bad I won't make it for the lunch special. That's a GREAT price... Ralph's sells a bootleg "California roll" for $3.95 alone.

Actually, I really will be driving to FV tonight after work. Is there a faster way of getting there? I Mapquested it from Los Angeles, but I really don't want to take the 405 for 30+ miles. :( I made a few friends in a band who will be practicing in the area, and now that the boyfriend's gone I'm determined not to spend my days home alone watching Seinfeld reruns.

Peace,
Dezign

Are you talking about Fuji's? That place is NASTY. Their fishes are discolored from being out too long, and their rice is hard as rock. Believe me, I worked as a waiter at Mikuni at Sacramento for a year, and I know what they should look like. I am an avid sushi eater as well.

Mikuni's by far, has the best tasting rolls/sushi/sashimi in northern california. I have a friend who owns a sushi restaurant as well, in Sac, but he has a long way to go.

Sushi is raw fish as well as sashimi. There are some steamed sushi pieces and sashimi, like octopus. So you when you say that sushi is not raw, that is not correct.
The only difference between sushi and sashimi is that sushi has rice under the piece.

BTW, rolls ARE NOT sushi nor sashimi. They are americanized derivative.

Do I *look* like a sir? :p I've been going on the word of friends that uni is the one thing I shouldn't try (maybe I got the Japanese name wrong - is uni the sea urchin?) Since I'm hearing otherwise, perhaps I'll have to check it out.

OK, I'm not exactly the expert on Japanese cuisine. So, SASHIMI is raw fish...so WTF is Sushi, then?

I won't eat anything that doesn't come off a stove or out of an oven.

Well, their dinner menu is just a dollar more for their combos. Usually I just take the 405 the whole way through, and Southbound is usually a bit faster than Northbound (FV to LA) at evenings. There is no shortcut, and please don't take PCH all the way down (tried it, took about 2-3 hrs.). The 405 runs right through FV, so that's basically your best bet.. nearest freeways are 55 and 22 but they involve a bit of local driving or connecting to the 405 at some point or another.

BTW, Fountain Valley is a GREAT place for restaurants. Some of the best Sushi joints in Orange County (under $40) are here, we have a few famous Chinese restaurants, several good Vietnamese restaurants, and Pizza joints, Pasta, South Coast Plaza restaurants are all about 5-10 minutes away :)

A good number of small family-owned restaurants close on Sundays and Mondays (or just Mondays).

It doesn't apply to fast food and chain restaurants, i.e. McDonalds, Taco Bell, TGI Fridays, and Applebees.
