Aren't there other situations where you must have a home phone line plugged in ? Can anyone else name some ?
Yes, calling 911, is a big example. Yes, you can call from a cell phone, but a cell phone call usually takes several seconds to connect, you need to tell them where you are, and in some cases, you even need to be transfered from one department to another, for example, from the State Patrol to your municipality's 911 departmant. That takes time, and when someone calls 911, someone usually wants help ASAP.
For me, it's best to have a both a home phone and a cell phone. I like having two phone numbers. I give the home phone number out to anybody (salespeople, people who I don't know well, classmates at school, businesses that I deal with) that I wouldn't necessarily want or need to have able to contact me if I'm out, or working, or otherwise busy. People who are close to me, or who might need to talk to me immediately (like work) get the priviledge of having my cell phone number.
By having a home phone, I can also get by with the least expensive cell phone plan that has national coverage and free long distance, because I'm not using my cell phone for EVERY call that I might need to make in the course of the weekday.
I'm with Verizon, on the $40, 400 weekday minute America's choice plan with unlimited weekends and nights (starting at 9 PM

), and 1000 mobile to mobile (my sister, my dad, my mom's work cell phone, and a lot of other people I know use Verizon, so that saves anywhere from 50 to 150 of my 400 minutes every month).
EDIT: I almost forgot, the sound quality, even on the best cell phones, just isn't there when compared to a regular phone. Good sound quality is nice to have when you're on the phone with a lady.
