There is melody in Death Metal. Either you just can't hear it or you're listening to the wrong bands. Morbid Angel, Deicide, Luciferion, Decapitated, Vital Remains... to name few. The more grindcore influenced Death Metal bands like Aborted usually just play so damn fast it's hard to find the melodies.

Grindcore, there's a term I have never heard before!

It's hard to name only 5 because there's hundreds of songs I really like. But some songs that have been my favorites ever since first hearing them...

Power Metal: Helloween - Eagle Fly Free (Keeper of the 7 Keys Pt. 2 '88)
Heavy Metal: Pantera - Cemetery Gates (Cowboys From Hell '90)
Death Metal: Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face (Tomb of the Mutilated '92)
"Gothenburg Metal": At The Gates - Blinded By Fear (Slaughter of the Soul '95)
Black Metal: Darkthrone - En Vind Av Sorg (Panzerfaust '95)

acutally the only death metal i find decent is "six feet under" ie) -lycanthropy -human target

i could kinda understand him, and at least it has some sort of melody. by far not my fave band though. uggggggg!!!

if u like melody you should like therion i think its not really death metal, but its nice, try and listen to some of their stuff

its kinda a marraige of opera and metal with kick @ss riffs

angel of death, blah.... but therion, wow, thats some good stuff. definitelly not death metal or speed metal. i like the opera mixed in. any other suggestions??

what about "saxon", and "rhapsody"?? similar to therion??

You might like Iced Earth. Check out "Alive in Athens - Dante's Inferno". Or the studio version will suffice.

Also check out Blind Guardian.

- Meshuggah - Future Breed Machine

Sweet! Another Zao fan! You, good sir, have excellent taste in music :) My list to follow:

1. Metallica - fade to Black
2. Arch Enemy - Ravenous
3. Zao - To Think of You is to Treasure an Absent Memory
4. Dream Theater - The Glass Prison
5. Emperor - Empty

there are so many; it's so hard to choose just five.

BTW, for those who don't like death metal, check out Arch Enemy. Their vocalist is female, and while she "sings" in a death fashion, I find it very easy to understand her. She enunciates very clearly while spitting out the most demonic sounding vocals I have ever heard... Check out the song in my list, as well as "Silent Wars," "We Will Rise," "End of the Line" and "Despicable Heroes." (I just bought their CD Anthems of Rebellion and I am in love :))

Therion is really good indeed :)

Rhapsody is what I'd call "dragon metal", which is just a subcategory of powermetal, lots of fast guitars and double bass, etc.
I like it, try it out.
By the way, Luca Turilli, who wrote most of Rhapsody's stuff has released some solo stuff which is also very good.

If you like that, chances are you like stuff like Freedom Call, Majesty, Gamma Ray, Angra, Stratovarius and Edguy.
Might wanna check out Nightwish, Lacuna Coil and Sinergy as well.
Oh and Morifade as well :)

Anyway, too many to mention, but just off the top of my head:
1: Iron Maiden - Flight of Icarus
2: Metallica - Ride the Lightning
3: Nightwish - She is my Sin
4: Queensryche - Eyes of the Stranger
5: Iron Maiden - The Trooper

If you like Gamma Ray, check Helloween and Pink Cream 69.

I can't see how you woul drate "She is my Sin" above "Dead to the World" and "The Kinslayer", I think The Kinslayer is one of Nightwish's greatest songs ever (might be because it was the first song I heard that led me to love them), it's amazing. 10th Man Down is another great, blends so many things and so well.

Going to see Helloween on 10/12 actually :)
Pink Cream used to be pretty damn hard to come by, but these days it seems like shops are starting to carry their CD's, that's a good sign :)

She is my Sin was my first Nightwish song, so maybe that's why I love it, but I agree, The Kinslayer is amazing as well, as is 10'th Man Down, it's a shame they never play it live :(
